It happened in the middle of the night while the homeowners were asleep. Someone came through the garage and burglarized their homes right under their noses, twice in the past three weeks to houses less than a mile from each other in Granger.

“Doing it while people are home makes it more serious,” said Sgt. Bill Redman, a St. Joseph County police spokesman. “People in those neighborhoods need to be aware of that.”

The same person or people could be responsible, Redman said.

The neighborhood is just east of Bittersweet Road and north of the Indiana Toll Road.

Most recently, about 1 a.m. Friday, a man stole the garage opener from a car in the 12300 block of Saddle Court, police said. The burglar swiped two purses, a wallet, an iPod, three cell phones and even carried out a 42-inch plasma TV.

The commotion awoke a woman upstairs, but the person already was gone when police arrived.

And on Feb. 21, a cell phone and wallet were taken from a home in the 12200 block of Timberline Trace North.

The woman who lives in the house told police she woke up on the couch about 3 a.m. and saw a “tall male with a stocking cap” leave the kitchen. She found her husband asleep, and he then called police.

Police said the husband told them he had closed the overhead garage door when he got home but found it open after his wife saw the man in the kitchen.

The cell phone and wallet were taken from a basket in the kitchen.

SOMEONE SHOULD LOOK TOWARDS ELKHART/GOSHEN CRIMINALS. SOUNDS JUST LIKE THE MAN WHO CAME INTO MY HOME IN 2006. AND I DIDN'T GET MY PURSE BACK TIL 2007, CAUSE OF RED TAPE IT BEING IN INDIANA AND I LIVE IN NILES. I HAD BEEN IN THE HOSPITAL, AND THEN WHILE RECOVERING HE CAME IN AFTER WATCHING ME IN MY WINDOWS. HE WAITED FOR ME TO GO TO BED. THEN HE CAME IN BACK DOOR TOOK MY PURSE AND LET OUT FRONT DOOR.HE NEVER GOT PROSECUTED, AND TOOK A PAIR OF GOLD EARRINGS IN THERE TOO. I WAS SCARED FOR MONTHS!!

I forgot to add: The police need to patrol the subdivisions at night, from 10 pm to 5 am. There is nothing else for them to do during those hours. These burglars could be caught actually if the police do this.

This type of home invasions have been going on for over 2 years in the Jefferson area north of Goshen. Done the same way, checking doors all night and going in to take cash while we all sleep. This is a nice family oriented area that these punks are taking advantage of. We are reduced to living like prisoners, they even have entered during the day when owner is in the back. I don't understand why they have not been caught when they are so bold with their attempts.

Hey anonymous, do you mean Home Invasion? Because Home Evasion would imply that someone was trying to evade homes, or in other words the suspect was trying to avoid homes. Go back to school!
