THREE RIVERS — A local strike is tough on union workers, and it could start hurting other businesses soon. American Axle workers, including 800 in Three Rivers, have been on strike for three weeks. The union and company have not been able to reach a deal on wages and benefits.

Striking workers are still getting benefits through the union, but no wages. They say they're starting to feel the pinch on their wallets. Many are cutting back on their spending.

Business owners in Three Rivers say they've noticed, too, but it's not hurting them financially yet.

"We are going to be here until we get a respectable wage, what we deserve," said striking worker Randy Page.

Until then, he's on a tight budget, trying to pay the bills.

"We don't go out to eat. We don't go to the movies. We don't do a lot of things. We basically stay at home and try to get things accomplished around the house," said Page.

The strike is hurting workers now. In the long run, it could hurt others.

"The people at the restaurants come to the movies with their tips that they get from the people that eat out. And if they don't eat out, it affects the entire community," said Brian Willoughby, manager of Three Rivers 6, a movie theater.

Business owners have noticed workers outside on the street, not inside their businesses.

"There are a lot of people that I do know that work there that are regulars. And a few of them, I haven't seen in a few weeks that normally would be here. And I totally understand that," said Willoughby.

"We don't want to get in the politics of it or in the middle of it, but we support our town. We have a lot of clientele from America Axle and we feel bad about what is going on," said Tina Wyman, co-owner of Frankie's.

Everyone hopes the strike ends soon.

"There's some anxieties, and we haven't had any news about whether this is going to be settled soon," said Page.

American Axle workers say they're only asking to maintain their current pay and benefits.

The company maintains it has to ask for cuts to stay competitive. American Axle says the union has given similar concessions to other companies.

the company will move to mexico, you idiots will all be sitting there whining, and the world will go on.hopefully, without the jobs you lose, the union won't have anyone else to suck dry, and they will have to go to WORK!

If you guys think you deserve better then go to college and get a degree!...or find another job. You guys are really selfish. You haven't thought about how its affecting everyone else. Your not hurting your company, your hurting the people who make min. wage. So if you don't like it, have everyone quit at the same time, then you will hurt the business and go find a better job. STOP CRYING AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT BEFORE YOU DESTORY OUR ECONOMY!!!

God bless these workers who are willing to stand up for themselves and this nation. As a striking worker going on 2 years now at conn- selmer we have fought the good fight against evil, greedy, corporate america. Although we may eventually lose the battle we still have our dignity of doing what is right, to try and protect our standard of living. God will provide to those who seek justice and fair treatment. To the people that cross the line and the anti-union people your time will come.

$23 to $28 an hour is a lot more than most workers make and a lot of them are college educated. I wonder how many Pesos an hour you will make when your union chases this company out of the USA? Yes I guess some of us are “idiotic and stupid” but ONLY for putting up with the unions and their outrages demands and damaging effects on the American people and American economy.

to the person who says he/she would work for $10/hour: Maybe that is all you CAN earn because you aren't even intelligent enought to use correct grammar. "move there and get me a job?!" How ignorant, do you have a spouse and children to support. I highly doubt it!! The price of gas, groceries, and shelter continues to rise, yet we want the workers to make less! No one can raise a family, own a home, a vehicle, and make $14.50 an hour!

I know that factory workers at american axle do not make 100K per year. The only way this can happen is if that person accumulates a lot of overtime. They accumulate overtime because the company is doing so much business that it needs to increase production. If the company finds it necessary to have employees work overtime, then the employee is entitled to make the money he does for those hours. But the average 40 hour wage is only about $700-$750 per week!!

People just show their ignorance when they say that the American Axle workers earn $65/hour. That is NOT TRUE!!! The wage is $23-28/hour. The remaining of the $65 is SUPPOSEDLY benefits. This dollar amount doesn't reflect the employee's wages. My husband brings home about $730/week. Not $2600/week that some of you uneducated people think.

I'm in the middle on this. I can agree on things from both sides. American Axle needs to look at the big picture.... this strike is effecting thousands of people in michigan. what happens to all these other people who are getting laid off? where are all these jobs gonna come from to employ them? some of these factories may downsize or close all together depending on the outcome of the strike! WHAT THEN! what's gonna happen to all of us , if they close down and move their factories to mexico?

Union workers might of lost the fight at ConnSelmer, but you can bet they ARE NOT putting out the amount of work we use to put out on a daily basis. SCABS are SCABS and always will be. No pride in what we did for years. Just a number, move along.

Companies, make record profits because they have been able to develop a good market and take care of it, they do this in spite of the high cost of union labor, time studies and featherbedding. If the people in 3 rivers think it is starting to slow down now. Wait until that plant closes down and moves to a more friendly environment. Ask the people at Conn Selmer how much they gained by trying to put the company in a position where it could no longer compete in the market.

There may have been a time and place for unions but that time is long gone. All unions do now is protect the workers that come to work drunk, on drugs and that don't carry their weight. All union workers will be out of a job before long as we can no longer afford to buy cars by the big 3 as they are way too high. You will never be able to compete with the likes of the Toyota's, Nissans, Kia's and Honda's of the world. So my advice to you is enjoy it for the short time you have it.

Gee I'm sorry you can't live on $14.50 an hour - but believe me - there are many who can and do. (without state or govt assistance)

Thursday, Mar 13 at 2:31 PM anonymous wrote ...

People are not taking stabs at the people making $14.50 an hour. or even $20 an hour. These people on strike were making $65 an hour. Do they work any harder than you making 14.50? I bet not.....There should be fair wages across the board for everyone. I agree with Union Worker, that profit sharing would be great. They keep playing games, and they WILL move jobs to Mexico. The people on strike make over $100K a year, and can afford to be off work. What do they care

Im a union worker and I make a boat load of money due to overtime, but my income goes right back into the community as I don't cook, and I like nice things. What we need to do is revamp pay structures, honest reporting combined with profit sharing when times are good. I am part of the reason why the company makes record profits why should'nt I reap the rewards??

Thursday, Mar 13 at 12:46 PM Anonymous wrote ...

Can any of you anti union idiots tell my family how to take care of them on $14 an hour? We are a 2 income family, living in a small home. We own used cars and don't take big vacations. At $14.50 an hour, I would have to work an entire day just to fill my gas tank!! Forget about groceries, utilities, and clothing for my kids. It would be fine to get paid those low wages if the cost of everything else in my city would also go down. You all are uncaring and ignorant!

Unions were created to get workers a FAIR wage and good working conditions. The unions have more than accomplished that especially the UAW. The time for the union workers to back off and try and live like the average blue-collar worker is LONG OVER DUE! The UAW and other unions are the reason that jobs are leaving the USA and going to other countries. The UAW is KILLING Michigan. THE FACT THAT A COMPANY MAKES A GOOD PROFIT DOES NOT OBLIGATE THE COMPANY TO MAKE THE UNION WORKERS RICH!

Thursday, Mar 13 at 9:21 AM Anonymous wrote ...

well here is another anti union comment. My late father, a union man, said before he died, that the union were good at first, but they got to big and corrupt. You never gained anything when you went out on strike, you loose more than you gain. Yet the big shots union leaders still drew their salaries, while you walked the picket line. Strikes like these cause jobs to leave area, and this is why south bend is nothing, because of union attitude, in this area. It is better to have a job.

Thursday, Mar 13 at 8:59 AM Anonymous wrote ...

They are making WAY too much money and they know it! I guess if I was an over paid union worker like them, I would be fighting to keep my fat pay check as well. Can you belive how much most are getting paid along with their benifits?!?! Wow!!! Wish I got paid that much to just stand on an assembly line and do the same thing over and over. Bet it takes a big college degree in order to do that! See where the union has gotten us? Lets get the cost of labor to where it should be. Wake up!

are the 800 union workers who are on strike willing to move to mexico????

Thursday, Mar 13 at 6:55 AM Thankful for unions wrote ...

I am so sick of the anti-union comments that stupid people keep posting. The COA is steadily increasing and companies need to stick to their contractual agreement. When they don't stick to that agreement, is it fair to their worker? If a company is making record profits, is it fair to try to take away from the employee? Labor unions were created for this very purpose-though some have gotten carried away with trouble, most of them are good to their members. Get a grip instead of a gripe!
