VALPARAISO (AP) — A hospital nurse who was found passed out with a needle in her hand has been accused of stealing painkillers.

Tracy E. Allen, 33, of Portage is charged with felony theft. Police say the Porter Valparaiso hospital nurse took liquid painkillers and replaced them with salt water.

A nurse reported Jan. 15 that a bottle of the painkiller Fentanyl appeared to have been punctured with a needle and replaced with another substance, Valparaiso police said. That day, Allen was found passed out on a floor.

A phone message left for Allen by The Associated Press Thursday was not immediately returned.

Police said Allen admitted altering drugs. She told them she suffered a back injury and obtained Vicodin and Xanax last fall but became stressed after that. She said she used a syringe to draw medicine from several vials of narcotics like Demerol and morphine in a medicine dispensing machine and then replaced the fluid with salt water.

Allen is no longer a nurse at the hospital, said Kelly Credit, director of planning and business development. The hospital would not say whether she was fired or resigned.

She also said the hospital found "no adverse patient outcomes" tied to the altered vials.

Nurses are NOT well compensated for their careers, not for the jobs they do!

I am sorry but who cares whether she jeopardized her career or whether she works hard or not. She chose that career and is being well compensated for it. We all have to make time to see our Doctor. She is no exception. She is a thief and put her patients comfort at risk. She should be fire, fined and put in jail.

This is very sad when this happens.Being a nurse for over 30 years I have seen this only a few times. The vast majority of medical workers are very honest and would never steal drugs or subsitute meds. Nurses like every one else have problems. Yes, we are held to a higher standard and rightly so! Nurses have very stressful lifes little free time maybe she could not get into her Dr.or just had no time to take off to heal .I think this lady was in alot of pain to jeperdize her career and license!

Mishawaka...as it may seem that is all we hear about is drugs, but the fact is drugs is a big problem and we need to fix it and get educated so that positive things will start to happen.

This one just happened to get caught...why just recently a clinic in Elkhart allowed several of it's employees to resign to save face and avoid the negative publicity...I wonder how many other patient care facilities locally, have workers who steal the physicians RX pads and write their own scripts for pain meds??!! You havn't even scratched the surface of this one!!!

Can't you reporters find anything interesting to put in the paper. I mean enough about drugs already. How about something positive!

It happens a lot more than we hear about in the news. Many times the facilities don't want the publicity so they don't report it, and they let them resign. So they go to their next job and it all happens again. So patients are at risk because if the meds. are tampered with, they don't receive the correct meds., but even if they don't they have nurses with a drug habit! This is absolutely absured that it's covered up (and take my word on it...it does). This issue should scare us all.

This is scary for patients who may have been being treated at that time, regardless of the outcomes the hospital found. This makes me nervous about hospitals period. There is no way doctor's and administrator's can monitor all the people working for them. God keep us!
