SOUTH BEND — An 86-year-old woman, unlocking the door to her home, was thrown to the ground as her purse was snatched from her Wednesday night.

The woman was in the 500 block of South 23rd Street just after 9 p.m. when she felt someone tug the purse off her shoulder. The pull caused the woman to tumble backwards and hit her head on the ground.

According to police reports, the women’s purse was recovered in an alley near the 400 block of South 25th Street, with an unspecified amount of cash removed.

The woman, who could offer no description of the assailant, complained of head and hip pains and was taken to Memorial Hospital, where she remained in stable condition Thursday afternoon.
