SOUTH BEND — Protesters are marking the fifth anniversary of the Iraq War with anti-war demonstrations around the country. Two local military families have opposing views of the war, but manage to agree on one thing.

"It's been five years too many so if you want to protest it, we have plenty of signs,” said Kathy Liggett to a passerby.

Liggett's son has served three tours of duty in Iraq.

"I've been against the war since before the war started, recognizing the reason for engaging in Iraq were all bogus reasons,” she told WSBT News.

This military mom says it's time to bring our troops home.

"And here we are today, beginning the sixth year of war, and nearly 4,000 of our men and women have lost their lives in Iraq,” Liggett said.

David Dunn knows that part of war. His son Cpl. Aaron Seal served with South Bend's Company B. A sniper killed him in 2006.

"We still have our days and it's hard,” Dunn said. “It's real hard."

Dunn says the progress being made overseas is one of the many reasons he supports the war. He remembers a story Aaron told him while in Iraq.

"He told me that he was on a patrol and the kids came up to him one time and held their thumbs up, and that really touched him,” Dunn said. “And he said, ‘That's why we're here, Dad. It's for the next generation.’"

But Liggett doesn't believe progress is being made.

Through all the disagreement, there's one thing they do agree on.

"Whether you support the war or not, I'm behind the troops 100 percent,” Dunn said.

"We're 100 percent in support of the troops,” Liggett said. “Every one of them, each one of those men and women is a hero."

A vigil and rally is being held Wednesday in front of the Morris Performing Arts Center in South Bend. It will feature community members who will discuss the cost of the ongoing war to our community. The vigil lasts until 8 p.m. and everyone from the community is invited to attend.

According to the UN, Both Clintons, Al Gore, John Kerry, Intell agencies from all over the world, Iraq had wmds. Just because we didn't find them doesn't mean they weren't there. Sadaam was supporting terrorist, and after 11 years and 17 UN resolutions being viloated, we could not afford to trust that idiot. It's ok to be against the war, but if we don't win, it would be disasterous to our nation.

I AGREE WITH KATHY LIGGETT. SHE IS AN INTELLIGENT LADY AND ALSO IS MY TEACHER AT A LOCAL COLLEGE. I THINK THAT THE WARRIORS ARE THE HERO BUT THE WAR PER SAY IS A SHAME. WE DO NOT NEED TO BE THERE. THE PEOPLE THAT WAGED A WAR ON US WAS NOT IN IRAQ THEY WERE FROM IRAN.

Those who claim that this war is a war to protect our freedom often criticize those who exercise the freedom to criticize the war. Ironic?

You people need to get a clue about what is really going on here. You cannot "support the troops" and be against this war. This war is bigger then you can imagine and that its effects will be felt for generations. If the war was so bad so many of us would not keep re-enlisting or wanting to come back tour after tour. Every little freedom you enjoy was provided by a vet fighting a war somewhere, if we don't win here America will suffer more then ever. So if your not here stop whining and shut up

I think it's sad that Mr. Dunn feels he has to support the war, probably to give his son's death meaning. It's for the next generation? I hate to tell you, but from what I've heard when they interview Iraqis, they don't seem to think it's going to be for the next generation, it's going to be several generations, if at all. Oh, & just like Bush & his boys always say, 4,000 deaths is just a number, no biggie.
