Strip Club Permit

NEW BUFFALO TOWNSHIP — The same community that attracted a multi-million dollar casino could become home to a strip club.

A Chicago company filed for a permit to build a gentleman's club in New Buffalo Township near Four Winds Casino. It would go on Michigan 239, just south of Wilson Road.

Many families say a strip club does not belong in their backyards.

"I was shocked," Margaret Demorrow said.

The only poles her friend Margaret Whitaker wants to see are the ones holding up her daughters' swing set.

"I have two small children, and I really don't want them to have to experience this or see this," said Whitaker. "The school bus drives by and the casino is right here and now there is a strip club."

NOI, the company that filed for the permit, says the club would "not change the essential character of the area." It points to nearby gas stations and smoke shops.

But homes are also close.

"I grew up here my whole life. It was a wholesome environment, and we don't need this sort of thing in New Buffalo. Maybe take it somewhere else," said Whitaker.

A more restrictive adult entertainment ordinance was passed after the application was filed.

So, the company's lawyer says the application must be accepted under the previous ordinance. That would allow the club to be built more than 1,000 feet from the casino and 300 feet from schools, playgrounds, churches and residential zoned areas.

According to the permit, the club meets those guidelines.

"If there is something they are planning down the street with a kids area, a Wal-Mart or some sort of grocery store, that's not so bad. But we don't need a gentleman's club," said Whitaker.

It's a stance both women say they're taking for their families and their community, even if they don't know what the club will offer.

NOI's permit application did not say whether topless dancing would be included.

People will have a chance to voice their opinion at a public meeting April 1 at the New Buffalo Township Hall.

Hey everyone, give a big thumbs and up and a THANK YOU to all of the NB township board members past and present! They wanted the casino and all the glory that came with it. Neve rmind the citizens! Why don't they put the strip club right down on Krueger Road, right in the backyard of a well known family. How about on Hoder Rd, that would be good, right next to some NB Township planning commission members house. Then we'll see if they still "LOVE" the casino and all the trash it brings.MUAH!

The choice that the women make to work in these places have lasting negative effects. People who patronize these businesses are contributing to this by making women objects as opposed to subjects. True "gentlemen" do not visit strip clubs. Of course there will also be the need for enhanced security in the area. It's bad for the entire community.

YOU ALLOW THE CASINO WHY NOT THE STRIP CLUB. IT IS YOUR JOB TO WATCH YOUR CHILDREN AND DON'T TAKE THEM TO THE STRIP CLUB. YOU MUST NOT RIDE THE FENCE AND BE OKAY WITH GAMBLING AND NOT WITH STRIP CLUB. BUT IF THEY WERE PUTTING IT IN BENTON HARBOR, YOU WOULD BE FINE WITH IT AND WE HAVE PROBLEMS AND THERE IS NO STRIP CLUB HERE. SO LOOSEN UP YOUR HOLIER THAN THOU BELT AND GET WITH THE TIMES

No surprise. For all you supporters I seriously doubt you ever dealt with the exploitation issues of these types of places. Society just puts its head in the sand when looking at the peoples lives casinos/gambling and strip clubs ruins. A breeding ground for drugs, crime and all kinds of exploitation of people. Love the sin but ignore the consequences. Just another 'business' to SUCK the money out of the weak or exploit the weak. Go help an exstripper/exgambler and you might feel different.

I dont know why I was surprised at all the people on here for the idea! It's sad that the US is turning into Sodom and Gomorrah! What happened to our values? What happened to God? And we wonder why the world is the way it is today! Yes, these type of "businesses" lead to more crime!

The fact that strip clubs are masked by the term "gentlemen's club" is ridiculous. We don't need a business like this tainting the beautiful Southwest lower Michigan region. Bad idea.

It will be more money to the community. New Buffalo will still be the beatiful town that it is today. People will still come to the beaches and the shops by the lake. Heck, people bring their kids to the casino now. A gentleman's club sounds like a wonderful idea. Waa waa, cry over something else. Move if you don't like it.

NOI says nothing about putting in a strip club! It's says it wants to put in a Gentlemans club! Big difference if it's a true Gentlemans club. But if you don't like the businesses that are coming I suggest you move!!!!

The casino was the proverbial "camel's nose under the tent." If you think this is the end of it you're sadly mistaken. Will it bring in money and jobs to the community? Sure it will, but the community will pay the price in unintended consequences.

What the heck did ya think was going to happen? THIS is exactly what casino's attract. Give it 2 years and crime will skyrocket in that area. You will see an increase in prostitution and in 10-15 years, you will have slums surrounding the community. It's not a prediction, it's a statistical fact. Look it up.

Think back folks. One of the reasons there was opposition to the casino was people worried about what else it would attract. Time to draw a line in the sand! This beautiful community doesn't need a strip club.

They cried about the casino, they'll cry about this. Heck, they'd cry if you wanted to build a homeless shelter, a YMCA, or any other business. It's not like the children can get in the strip club, if you don't want to go to the strip club, don't go. It's that simple. You aren't forced to go in there. I don't see why it's a big deal. And I do agree with the county road situation that bjk100 wrote about. It's horrible.

I agree, why not? The township will fight it just like they did the casino. And now look at it. And for not wanting your kids to see it, don't take them. I mean it's not like they will have women standing half naked outside. In case some of you haven't noticed, New Buffalo is not the town it USED to be. I grew up here and went to school here. Nice to work and visit, but I wouldn't want to live here again with all the hustle and bustle.

If a strip-club is properly maintained, it would fit in perfectly in the area they are planning to build it. There would have to be a definate and constant security force involved. That is the key.

This would be a mistake to allow a strip club in our community, would bring more creeps and crud balls and crime no matter how nice or classy you keep it. we all need to fight this tooth and nail so to speak, in other words nip it in the bud.
