SOUTH BEND -- The property tax plan is good news for homeowners. But that's not the case for local government agencies, including the St. Joseph County Public Library.

They're now forced to find ways to reduce spending to make up for the shortfall. Some of the options they're considering could have a major impact on people.

"And the library is the perfect place," said mother Jennifer Farwell.

Especially for 12 year-old Austin Holte. He's autistic and the disorder makes it difficult for him to concentrate.

"If there's too much sound or too many people around he can't focus. He can't draw," said Farwell.

But coming to a quiet, relaxing place on a Saturday afternoon could soon end for Austin and many others.

"Since the House bill passed it's going to cut some of our funding," said St. Joseph County Library Manager Libby Feil.

The St. Joseph County Library is facing a possible loss of $790,000 next year and $1.6 million in 2010.

It’s forcing the library board to look at ways to cut spending.

"The library always tries to be a really responsible stuard of the public monies. So what we decided what would be best for the patrons and for the taxpayers is if we started preparing for this now,” said Feil.

One of the many options the board is considering includes cutting back hours and closing on Saturdays.

"The library board is just tossing these around as ideas. So it hasn't been decided at all that we're going to close on Saturdays or that we'll close early on any other days. But those options are ones we have to think about," said Feil.

But if these options do become a reality, it would have a definite impact on people like Austin.

"He begs me to come. He begs me to come. If we didn't have this library because we're supposed to be quiet, I don't know where we would go," said Farwell.

Because the property tax legislation recently passed, the library says the money they're projected to lose will most likely change. They hope to have the exact numbers in a few months.

The library board is scheduled to meet Monday night to discuss the budget shortfall.

I live in K-county and can't afford the high cost of paying to use the Warsaw Library. If I had access just one day a week, I would use it voraciously. I read fast (Michener's Hawaii took a week. J.Austin's P&P about a day), and have to resort to buying books @ebay or amazon. I'm no techy, but would it be at all feasible/profitable to set up book blogs, where the library selects books for readers to review and talk about? Do blogs pay? I'd love to talk about my reading.

"We do have the money,'' Dvorak said. "It's a matter of priorities.'' He was alluding to some $4.6 million the county received from the state in an unexpected payment of local option taxes from 2005. The commissioners have said they want to use part of that money to pay bonuses this year to county employees to make up for the lack of pay raises. Using the money for bonuses, Ross said, in his opinion is not negotiable. Dobson echoed that. The commissioners all agreed, COUNTY TO GET BONUSES

This is pathetic. You want to see how St. Joseph County Squanders their Budget? Just take the Example of the North Liberty Branch. Don't get me wrong, It is a Beautiful Building, but C'mon. How about all those flashy Signs in front of the Newest Branches. Or, lets talk about the sheer number of libraries in the county. Now, you see where the problems are, They made their bed. Deal with it.

Why wouldn't you want college educated folks working at the library? Wouldn't it just be the blind leading the blind then? Also, don't library workers deserve decent living wages as well? It sounds like T. Paine needs to get into a library and use the "People's University".

The reason the Library is talking about cutting spending is for the very reason that Trebor mentions. Unlike other govt. agencies, we don't spend money we don't have. In response to "rather not say," please note that closing earlier is under consideration as well. The library wants to cut spending in ways that will affect the public as little as possible. Also, note that the construction projects come from a legally separate source of funds. Construction $ can't be spent on operating the library

not hard to figure out how to cut costs...turn down the heat...close on sunday, open 1/2 day saturday, open later durning the week, close earlier....raise late fees (books shouldn't be late anyway). lay off people, get rid of slackers...check with the senior center & schools for more volunteers as this IS a community library. what about fund raisers? HELLO???

Why not close sometime during the week? Because then employees with a college degree would go elsewhere. I love the library, but it's run by educated idiots. Lose the IT department. I don't go to the library to feel like I'm at NASA, I go for quiet, and to find a book, and a card catalogue does the job just fine, if not better. Maybe I'll start my own lending library. Ben Franklin did it without a single microchip or having to pay exorbitant salaries to people with college degrees.

"$1.6 million in 2010" HOW MUCH DO WE SPEND A YEAR NOW ?

Instead of closing earlier,, when people are getting an early dinner done, to get to the library before it closes,, how about opening later in the day, you may also lessen the frequency of the homeless in the building getting warmed up, or cooled down whichever season it may be.

Look leave saturday alone and close sunday. Fours isn't worth opening for. What happens to the money that is being collected for movie rentals and late fee's?
