Police are trying to locate a stolen semi-trailer loaded with more than 20 tons of Hershey's products.

John Boyd, LaPorte County police chief of detectives, said he isn't sure if there's a black market for that much chocolate or exactly what the thieves will do with the more than 41,000 pounds of goodness.

Daryl Rey, 58, said he picked up the load near St. Louis and left the trailer outside Gas City truck stop on U.S. 421 just south of Michigan City on Saturday morning.

The Michigan City area man returned from his home on Johnson Road less than 24 hours later to drive the load to a warehouse in Wisconsin, and the 53-foot-long trailer was missing.

He believes professionals were at work, given that the hidden satellite tracking device was removed from the trailer.

In all likelihood, Boyd said, whoever stole the trailer didn't know what was inside when they drove off with it.

Only the name of the trucking company was listed on the trailer.

Boyd said trailers usually are stolen for scrap or converted for personal use.

Anyone with information is asked to contact LaPorte County Police at (219) 326-7700.
