SOUTH BEND — A pregnant woman was shot three times Tuesday afternoon in an apartment complex at Monroe and Taylor streets.

Police say the woman's boyfriend apparently shot her by accident. Police say the couple may have been playing with the 9 millimeter gun when it went off. He ran from the apartment through a back door, and police have not been able to find him.

Friends rushed the woman to Memorial Hospital where she is listed in serious condition. The woman and her unborn baby are expected to be fine, police said.

Four or five small children and several adults were in the apartment at the time of the shooting, about 4:15 p.m., investigators said.

The apartment is across Taylor from Coveleski Regional Stadium.

Frustrating when people say we shouldn't have guns, because the ones who want them will get them anyway, which leaves nothing for protection. These are the people who are hurting children and others with them. Wonder how many of them have had lessons, v. the ones that use them for protection!

These people are the ones who give us (who want to keep our guns) a bad name. What a stupid thing to do playing with guns while kids are around, or playing with it at all. It should be locked up. Is the gin registered or even legal with these people. Why did he run if everybody could vouch it was an accident. Please tie your tubes and take parenting classes and be under investigation with C.P.S. for what ever good it will do. Mark my words down the road this will happen again, with the kids sad

Loaded gun - 4 or 5 small children - several adults. Nice mixture. What are the odds that one of these days one of those kids will take a loaded gun either to school or wherever and "play" with it just like he/she sees it's done at home. Go figure. all the adults should go to jail for being in the home when this happened they were probably all in the same room. If you are with a criminal you are a criminal. Why are not all the children taken away for bad being put in a dangerous situation? If the they crack down on this stupid stuff it will have to stop or at least not hear of it as much.
