SOUTH BEND — An Indianapolis woman remained hospitalized Wednesday morning after an accidental shooting, one of five incidents involving guns to which police responded from Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning.

The first, a shooting of a pregnant woman in the 400 block of Tyler, is being called accidental. Police believe Lisa Washington, of Indianapolis, was shot Tuesday afternoon by a boyfriend who was showing off a large-caliber handgun.

As of this morning, Washington was still at Memorial Hospital listed in serious condition. Her boyfriend, who fled the scene after the shooting, has not been found by police.

In a second shooting, a 35-year-old man was wounded in the leg outside an apartment building at 400 Eastview St. at about 12:40 a.m. Wednesday.

Police say they found the victim lying on the ground outside of the apartment, but he wouldn’t provide details of the incident.

A witness told police that three men got out of a dark-colored Buick car and started punching and kicking the man before shooting him in the leg and taking his wallet.

The man was taken to Memorial Hospital, where it was believed his injuries were not life threatening.

Police also responded to a string of drive-by shootings overnight, in which no one was injured but at least two homes suffered damage.

At the first, near the intersection of Carroll and Altgeld streets, a family told police they were asleep inside the home when they heard a car drive down the alley and six shots fired just after 1 a.m.

Police sent to the scene found shell casings and bullet fragments in the home.

At the scene of another incident at 1:25 a.m. in the 100 block of East Milton, police found bullet holes and shell fragments.

According to police, witnesses at both houses believe the incidents are linked to a fight over a failed relationship with a woman.

The final gun incident of the night, police said, occurred in the 700 block of East Indiana Avenue about 1:30 a.m..

A 19-year-old male told police he was shot at by two men driving a white Pontiac Grand Prix. No one was injured and police believe the incident is part of long-standing feud.

Lower Property Taxes??? I wish. I live just a few blocks from here and pay $2600 a year and see NO relief in sight regardless of what they promise. My expensive property taxes have gotten us knowhere. They aren't using the money to protect us anyway. I've seen this neighborhood go down hill since I moved in 3 years ago and the Police do NOTHING. Our home has been robbed, we can't even go to grocery store without setting our alarm system. I AM FED UP. My children can't even go outside!

Sounds to me like Tom Paine wants to hack into peoples computers to steal personal information while smoking a doobie, with no repercussions.

Perhaps we need to get our priorities straight. Let's treat those with drug problems rather than put them in prison. It is much more cost effective. When I think of the costs in putting people in prison (what is the average now $30,000-40,000 annually) and how the government doesn't have any money. We are now putting 1 in 100 in prison, mostly for drug offenses. Maybe we need to do something different, after all, insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result, right?

Lower property taxes. Good. Fewer cops. Good. All we need to do now is make laws that keep violent people (that includes drunk drivers) behind bars, instead of filling jails with pot smokers and computer hackers. This way we won't need so many cops and lawyers and any citizen will be able to visit any part of their city without fear of homicide. Write your representative. HEY! Don't be lazy. Go to their websites. They provide forms. Tell them jails are for dangerous people, not addicts, etc.

Gee, seems not long ago the cops were trying to tell everyone this but they were being characterized as crybabies and exagerators! It's always funny how people finally see that the street cops have no reason to make these stories up about what they see everyday, but the elected officials DO have a reason to sugarcoat and make it seem like the cops are blowing things out of proportion. Let the bodies keep droppin' here in 'da Bend and see who you believe. Just think: 4 more yrs of Lueck-icty!

Anyone with any true, legal ideas of how we the citizens of this community can get this town cleaned up? Mayor..you should reply..You are much of the reason we have high crime,oh yeah, lay off the officers and go updo the areas of S.B. that we as non-affording people cannot enjoy because we are stressing out on how we are going to keep our homes and on how to duck the bullets that seem to be flying everywhere! Maybe we as a community can come up with a solution, soon.

Crime is getting worse in South Bend, and our mayor admitted in an interview that the first thing he will cut is police, fire and ambulance, due the decrease in property tax. How about cutting the football hall of fame, or subsidies for the Cove. If they want to be in South Bend, shouldnt they pay for it, instead of the taxpayers.

Is Luecke ready to admit that violent crime isn't down in South Bend yet? If he does now, it'll be easier to say it's down while campaigning for the next election.

That is very scary for the people that live in these areas. I would not only be scared for my life but also for my childrens life. What is going on in that area? I am just glad that no one was killed. And for the boyfriend that isnt man enough to stand up after he shot his pregnant girlfriend, even if it was accident I hope they find him and put him away for a long time. No real man would run like that after shooting their pregnant girlfriend.

Good thing the Mayor is considering laying off 30 police officers. Your right Mayor, the city isn't busy enough to justify the current number of police officers lets lay them off and watch crime go down. Give me a break.
