LAKEVILLE — LaVille Jr.-Sr. High School was put on lockdown Friday after getting a tip some students had weapons at school. Police never found any weapons at the school, but it still made for some tense moments.

It started after a parent called the school and said four boys planned to bring weapons.

Many parents took their children out of school early Friday. About 300 students left with their parents — that’s about half of the student body. But police say none of them were in any danger.

Students were put on lockdown around 10 a.m. and within the hour parents started to show up.

“There are police in there, dogs in there,” said parent Karol Senour. “They're scared and they just want to go home."

Senour got several text messages from her kids inside the school

"You should come and get me,” she said the text message read.

Other students made calls using their cell phones as rumors swirled that four students had weapons.

"I thought she said guns, so I'm coming down here to get my son,” parent Michael Gross explained.

"A lot of people were nervous, shaking, crying and stuff because that's the first time it's ever happened,” said student Erik Walsh.

Police quickly narrowed down their investigation to two students — two boys who had been at school Friday morning but left. The rumor was they left to get the weapons.

But after detaining both, and retracing their steps, police found nothing.

"Bottom line: No weapons were found in the school and around the school property,” said Sgt. Bill Redman of the St. Joseph County Police.

"It's nothing more than a rumor — nothing more than a rumor,” said principal John Arnett. “The police said they can’t substantiate anything more than that."

Still, for many it’s the thought of what could happen.

"I just didn't think it would happen here,” one parent said.

"My heart's racing right now thinking about it,” said another.

"Paducah, Ky., Columbine, and I know the school has it under control, the school does a good job with this situation but the kids are scared,” Senour said.

And for these parents, that's enough to take their kids home.

The lockdown was lifted around 12:30 p.m.

The two boys believed to be involved were questioned and police searched their homes. At this time the boys deny having anything to do with bringing weapons to school.

Police say both boys were on probation when they skipped school Friday morning. That violated their probation, so they were taken to the Juvenile Justice Center in South Bend.

In their search, police found a duffel bag containing some stolen items — a car stereo and GPS system — one of the boys admitted to stealing.

You people are dumb. There were no guns. Nobody died. They stole something. Point blank. GET OVER IT. It aint got nothing to do with the parents or anybody else, not even the rich snooty kids. So, let it go. Nobody was hurt. Nobody was in danger. It was simply just a big waste of time! That's all. Laterr gaters.

at least those less fortunate kids appreciate what they have. money doesn't make your child any more important than the students that did this. there was probably signs but no-one has time for that. teachers and staff better get a grip and pay attention to what is going on around them before a tragedy does happen.

what do you mean rich kids don't pick on the less fortunate? they think they are better than everyone else, yeah they might not talk to those less fortunate but you can bet they have their snobby little remarks. no kids are perfect nor are they innocent. any way being picked on is no reason to threaten anyones life... my daughter went to that school and rich kids did pick on her until i took her out of there. its not the kids fault that their parents aren't rich...

IF it had been a real situation - which is still debatable to me that it wasn't... anyway - the guns (or alleged) guns were supposedly hidden in the woods behind the school & allegedly that's why the boys left was to go get them. My point is - there is no easy fix to these situations. If you put in metal detectors & somone wants to do harm - they WILL find a way.

Once again,, what if it was a real situation here? We Need to have metal detectors in all schools, or are going to wait untill a disaster happens to our children

to the student who wrote in at 1:06 pm, now I see how this all really went down, someone needs to find out how this RUMOR got started and they need to be dealt with, yes those 2 kids will get punished for stealing but now they will NEVER live it down that they were suspect to the guns at school! Glad to know that all these students at this school were never in danger.

Back when i was in school and kidss would pick on the less fortunate kids they would just fight it out in the halls. Now you have the kids making threats with guns.I think you really need to look at there upbringing and the parents when it comes to a situation like this.

i went to laville for many years, they were good years. mynephews go to this school! it just breakes my heart to think something like this could go on in our little town. i remember the pelly murders, and that was unheard of back then. what is the world comming to when a child isnt even safe at school? i know they found nothing, but what if it wasnt a false alarm?

I have kids at both Laville schools and it is sad how people are bringing other things into this that shouldn't be brought up. Especially the person in Laporte sticking her nose in about grammer, what concern is this to you anyway. Have you heard of texting, well kids shorten the words to do that and it appears thats what they are doing here. Everyone of us has the right to be upset with these kids and the chaos, worry, and frustation that was brought upon us not knowing if our kids were safe.

The parents who should be mad are those with elementary children. Are you aware that in the midst of this; after the boys made threats & left the HS on foot but, BEFORE it was known there were no guns...elementary students across the road were outside at recess. The superintendant did NOT notify the elementary to give them ANY information. The elem found out from parents calling! Of course the elem then immediately locked down. IF it had been real, would you have wanted your kids outside?

I am concerned about the grammar and spelling of the students at the school..Maybe it should be closed down if they can not teach the basics.

To the anonymous teacher: If it was "all over" then the staff/administration should have been outside as parents began to arrive to talk to parents! But, as usual they were no where to be seen. Maybe, they should have used the news media to present facts at 12 noon? Instead they acted in typical LV administration behavior - assuming they owed parents nothing. There was definately mass chaos but LV can thank themselves for that!

I am a current 8th grade student at laville and this whole thing got blown way out of proportion there were actualy two seperate situations a parent called the school and said that they had heard that there was going to be a gun brought to school the suspects had stolen something and heard the cops were coming for them so they left school now both pieces were obtained by the school at the same time so it looked as if these students had been the ones to bring guns to school when realy they didn't

You can't blame kids because there parents are well off, RICH kids as you like to call them don't bully kids, look at the kids home life, our children learn from what they live, My son was picked on everyday, he don't run around tell people he's going to kill them, His parents were there to teach him right from wrong!!!

Non of this would have happend meaning student leaving if the office would have been upfront with the parents. We had noooooo Idea what was going on until the news said. How WRONG is that!!! News can know but parents cant be told. How redidculious.

The situation was taken care of the best way it could have been. My son texted me @ 11.00 and told me of the problem. I called the school and they verified it. Rumors will be rumors SO what---Are our kids safe? Thats all that matters at this point. However these young kids need guidance. Where were these kids parents? No kid should deal with being picked on, but that doesnt give them the right to bring a GUN to school to kill or hurt someone. My son was there today Im worried and disturbed.

I would like to say Thank You to the school staff for taking the situation seriously. There are people complaining on here, but had they NOT taken action, there would be even more complaints. I would also like to thank the local police for handling the situation quickly. It may not have been handled as quickly as everyone would've liked, but in those types of situations, every precaution needs to be taken for the safety of OUR kids. Thanks everybody for looking out for our kids.

As a teacher at LaVille I am greatly disturbed by the story by WSBT on the 12 news. The reporter stated that parents were allowed to pick up their children. At that time we were still on lockdown! This did not come from the school administration! Talk about chaos! It was all over by the time parents arrived but many still left. Some parents made the situation worse by their attitudes. The office staff did a GREAT job in a really tough situation! I'm proud to be a part of LaVille.

Beth, do you read what you write before you submit? This does not even make sense, nor are words spelled correctly....The school this situation well and desevre and round of applause also the cops. The only ones that should look foolish is wsbt. Be sure of what you are writing before cutting down WSBT or any other person or station - you are the one who looks foolish!

Not shocked... I am a student at LaVille and I can confirm to you that the rich kids didnt even know these existed LET ALONE pick on them. Blaming the students isnt going to do one thing. Maybe you should look at the kids parents first and see how they are like. I am sure that would change your opinion.

WSBT is not the only news station that reported on this one. Foolish is a bit harsh - if this would have been something and it was not reported then what? I am glad quick action was taken. WSBT does not make the news they just report it.

As the parents of a son who has been picked on and bullied by jerks througbout a good part of his academic life I can tell you we have seen what picked on kids go through. We moved from South Bend schools where is was horrible and the principal of Jackson Middle School told our 7th grade son "hang in there by the time you get to Ruley these bullies will most likely have dropped out" to getting out and going to PHM where the bulling although easier, still is more verbal than physical.

Not schocked what are you talking about?? I know FOR SURE all of the rich kids at LaVille do not even look at those kids let alone know who they are and talk to them. I didnt even know who 3 of them were. Maybe you should start blaming the kids parents. Get your facts straight.

Friday, Apr 4 at 6:22 PM Not Shocked wrote ...

Maybe now some of the spoiled brats that walk these hall will see that their cruel treatment to some kids does have an impact. Lets face it, we are not going to get along with everyone, but we don't have to pick on them earlier. I'm surprised this didn't happen sooner. One of these kids has been picked on for years!

You should have got this story straight before you aired it on tv. What you had before this was nothing like what you said now. I would be concerned for my children if the news aired something liek what you did. Kids were afraid because they were in there watching the news and listening to what you were saying. Next time get it straight. The school this situation well and desevre and round of applause also the cops. The only ones that should look foolish is wsbt.
