An Eau Claire man is dead following a fatal accident near Michigan-140 and Naomi Road.

Authorities said they received a call shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday night because a vehicle was on fire near the intersection of Bailey Road and Townhall Road, just southeast of the Pipestone Creek Golf Course.

Berrien County authorities found 40-year-old Daniel Lloyd Blankenship ejected from the vehicle he was driving. Blankenship died from his injuries.

Police say his vehicle left the road and hit trees along the shoulder before the vehicle caught fire. No one else was involved in the accident.

The sheriff's department said Blankenship was not wearing a seat belt. Speed and alcohol may also be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

I was a good friend of dan "hoss" blankenship he would make the worst of days end with a smile.. He could fabricate anything, and he always left his trademark behind, while it offended some people because they seen it as a waist of time, the rest of us knew it was just his way to leave his mark on what he had touched. He was a great guy..

I knew Dan very well, worked with him. "Hoss" was a great guy to know, did "magic" with a welder, fabricated things out of nothing. He will be missed by many who knew him. My condolence goes to his family on their loss.
