The Indianapolis Juvenile Correctional Facility has suspended a male security officer after two female teenage offenders said they had sex with him Saturday.

The girls, ages 15 and 18, were taken to area hospitals for examination, according to a press release issued by the facility. The girls said the sexual contact happened while they were assigned to the officer’s work crew for a cleaning detail.

The Indiana State Police have interviewed the suspect but had yet to arrest him.

St. Joseph County juvenile judge Peter Nemeth in December notified the facility, commonly called the Indiana Girls School, that he would no longer place girls there because of his concerns that it lacks adequate supervision and rehabilitation. Among complaints Nemeth’s staff heard from girls placed there was that male staff members, men they identified by name, often make sexual advances toward them, speaking to and touching them inappropriately.

Last month the facility drew Nemeth’s praise in announcing it would conduct a staffing plan to ensure recommended staff-to-offender ratios. The Indiana Department of Correction, which operates the facility, said the changes were not tied to Nemeth’s public criticisms.

Bill Bruinsma, executive director of the St. Joseph County Juvenile Justice Center, said he had few details about the case.

"We’re interested to see what the outcome of their investigation will be and we’ll go from there," Bruinsma said Monday. He said Nemeth is waiting to see the new staffing plan before deciding whether he will resume sending girls to the facility.

Bruinsma said there are still a few girls from St. Joseph County at the Girls School. It was unclear whether either of these alleged victims was from St. Joseph County. Girls School spokeswoman Gaylie Cotton said she could not immediately answer that question Monday.
