VALPARAISO (AP) — A Connecticut man was sentenced to a year in jail for failing to pay $127,000 in child support to an Indiana woman who is the mother of two of his children.

Porter County Superior Court Judge Mary R. Harper also ordered three years of probation for Andrew Givens, who was handcuffed and clad in a business suit in court Tuesday while several other prisoners wore orange prison outfits.

The 48-year-old Riverside, Conn., man apologized before his sentencing, saying he did not intend to deny his children the payments.

Givens pleaded guilty on Oct. 25 to a felony charge of failing to pay child support for becoming delinquent on payments to Jennifer Donohue, a Portage woman who is mother to his children, ages 11 and 13.

Defense attorney Robert Plantz had argued against prison time, saying Givens also has to support a child in Kansas and another in Connecticut.

"There's four little mouths to feed here," Plantz said.

Givens was being held in the Porter County Jail.
