KNOX — Officials in Starke County say they've accounted for hundreds of thousands of dollars in missing Major Moves money. The discrepancy was discovered on Monday. The county received $434,000 in Major Moves money in 2006 and another $433,000 late last year.

The 2006 money was mostly accounted for, but officials did not know what happened to the 2007 money until Thursday. County officials told WSBT News the state’s Department of Local Government Finance (DLGF) put the Major Moves money in the county's motor vehicle fund. The highway department used the money for its operations, but county officials didn't know the Major Moves money had been placed in that fund.

“That money was spent; it's not missing, it hasn't disappeared, it was spent,” said Michaelene J. Houston, Starke County Auditor. “The state DLGF based their budget with those figures included.”

The State Board of Accounts will determine whether the highway department’s spending was proper. Taxpayers can’t help but wonder if something else is going on.

“I think it's a crying shame that no one can account for that money,” said Pat Zobrisd, a taxpayer. “That's a lot of money.”

County commissioners say they will look into whether anyone in the county knew the state placed the Major Moves money into the highway fund and didn't tell anyone. The former highway commissioner, Pete Stanojevic, committed suicide in February. The State Board of Accounts report should be issued in a few months.

There is a paper trail on the spendings it couldn't be paid in cash so show us taxpayers the check book and then we can explain foolish spending to you.

Well sure its a cover up. This county is run by friends and family. Look at the folks involved and then look into what all they are involved in. How many family members are working together?

I really think that it is a big cover up, and we are being fed lies, because the elections are coming up and they want everything to look on the up and up. When we all think other wise. It is a shame.

The $$ has been spent and no details disclosed. WE CAN NOT LET THIS BE IT! The Commissioners(& the Auditor)need to be held accountable for spending this money before "knowing" what it was for. It is their JOB! Do not let them plea ignorance and let it slide. If they can't do their job, vote for someone that can. Elections are approaching-make your vote count! Now what are we to do for the rest year???

Maybe things are being looked into way more than anyone knows. When things come out to soon it can interfere with the investigation

It is too bad this story is inaccurate. The State is not to blame! The responsibility lies with the County officials period, the meager attempts to blame it on the state are merely smokescreens. The issue remains there is a large amount of money unaccounted for, and that should alarm the citizens of this county! Go to the council and commissioner meetings, make your voice heard. Be warned though this government is getting an increasing rep of not holding public opinion in very high regard.

It is too bad that this report is inaccurate and has alarmed citizens. The State does not prepare the County's budget, the County officials do. By law, for a non-Toll Road County, this money is put into the local unit's Highway Fund and spent along with all other Highway Fund monies. If there is a problem, it is that the report is not accurate and that some County officials do not understand how some of their funds are handled.

Mr. Reed brought this up in The Leader editorial and it is a good point. Why didn't the commissioners call for an investigation? Even if it proved no wrongdoing(sure) it should be done, don'tcha think?

All the commissioners should go to start with. Aren't they supposed to watch over this stuff? One isn't up for re-election yet, one isn't running for re-election so that is good, but one is. *VOTE* 2 problems could be gone right off the bat, but will it happen?

Start by looking at ALL the trustees in the county!

The man didn't shoot himself for nothing. He was over the department that spent the funds, there's definitely a stinky rat somewhere in the mix. I wouldn't be surprised if someone put the gun in that man's mouth... dead guy, missing computer, missing cell phone--reeks of cover up... Too bad for the citizens of that city; they're the ones who will suffer...

Cover up! This doesn't jive with the second story in the Leader. "Auditor issues highway spending list". Come on, nobody noticed an extra 434,000 in the account?
