Illinois mothers file lawsuit over babies switched at birthMARION, Ill. (AP) — A pair of mothers who say medical workers at a southern Illinois hospital accidentally switched their baby sons last month have filed two lawsuits. Attorney John Womick says he wants the court to file an injunction requiring Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion to investigate the incident. Womick says the baby boys' identification information was apparently switched while staff prepared them for circumcisions at the same time. Womick says both women suffered emotional and psychological injury. A spokeswoman says the hospital regrets the circumstances. The lawsuits name Heartland Regional Medical Center and its parent company, Community Health Systems Inc., of Franklin, Tenn. However, to say that there was no harm done is absolutely crazy. Anyone that has kids can say that the first days are so important. Can you imagine bonding and nursing a baby that is not yours and then a month later find out it was the wrong baby. All involved were injured. I am nurse and although I hate medical lawsuits. Some how they need to make sure NOTHING like this ever happens again- sometimes that means legal action. Tuesday, Apr 15 at 12:46 AM Mom of 2 wrote ...This is an unexcusable nightmare for these moms! I would sue as well! When I had my kids, at Memorial, they both had 2 id bracelts put on them right after they were born. The nurses always compared their numbers with mine every time they brought them to me. What kind of messed up hospital was this anyway?!? There is no reason for this to happen AT ALL! Tuesday, Apr 15 at 12:07 AM With a heart wrote ...What kind of heartless person would think this was no big deal and no one got hurt? The first month is the most important period of learning recognition for an infant, and of settling in for moms. I can't begin to imagine the horror those poor people have been through, nor the nightmares, trials, and psychological problems that could trouble them for the rest of their lives. Obviously, not understanding the pain indicates you are NO REAL PARENT, even if you have managed to produce an offspring. However, hospitals are supposed to take precautions to avoid mistakes such as these. When I was in the hospital with my daughter five years ago, they checked her bracelet to mine every time they brought her back to me. This was just negligence on the part of that hospital. I think the law-suit is understandable. This never should have happened, and who knows what else is going on there? Maybe this will wake them up. Monday, Apr 14 at 3:02 PM M wrote ...This hospital is notorious for their mistakes and this was no small mistake. Sueing them will hopefully force them to change their ways. Many people hate to go to this hospital and only do if they have to. The babies were switched long enough that one went home with the wrong mother. That's pretty bad. Give me a break, I know it shouldn't happen but it does. You got your child back and leave it at that. Monday, Apr 14 at 11:28 AM CS wrote ...Everyone has to be a victim, it's much more profitable. I know I'm a bit older but don't they keep the babies in your room most of the time now? Too many people are suing anymore...mistakes happen. At least the babies weren't any older than they were when it was figured out. If they had been old enough to know they were being yanked away from the only mom and dad they had ever known then yes, I think a suit would have been in order. My daughter weighed 9lb.8oz and the baby they gave me was 6lb.6oz. Luckally it was a planned c-section and I was awake dury because otherwise my girl would have also been mixed-up. No one said a word after I asked about the differant size and the nurse looked at my wrist No. and ran out and later brought me my daughter. I was just glad it got corrected. It is totally irresponsible that something like this can and does happen in this day and age. Obviously the negative remarks about no damage done is coming from persons who don't have a clue as to what being a mother is. The first moments, hours and days of attachment are so important. I don't like like lawsuits either but in this case... to just sue them is not enough. My heart goes out to these families and pray that all the love and understanding can help them through such a difficult time.
