A man suspected in the shooting death of his wife in Pulaski County remained in critical condition at 1:30 a.m. EDT Monday, authorities said.

Nursing staff at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in Michigan City said Tomas Solano, believed to be involved in the shooting Sunday afternoon in Monterey, Ind., was a patient at their facility.

No other information about Solano was released, staff said, because of the ongoing police investigation.

Pulaski County dispatchers said the shooting occurred in midafternoon on Center Street, in the small town near the Tippecanoe River in the northeast corner of the county.

Police told WSBT-TV that Solano shot his wife Denise as she sat in a car in front of their house. The incident happened after a series of fights the past several months.

On many occasions, police said, officers were called to help control the situation.

“Each time that we responded it’s ended in a peaceful manner. And we’ve left the house reassured by both of them that they would continue with their marriage without the police intervention,” Pulaski County Sheriff Mike Gayer told WSBT.

The man then drove to Michigan City, where his relatives live. Marshall County dispatchers said their officers were stationed at different points to intercept Solano, but he did not travel across their county and chose a route across Starke County instead.

Police found him hiding in the Greenwood Cemetery and told WSBT Solano had shot himself in the head.

Michigan City authorities declined to comment on the case early Monday, but said they expected more information to be available throughout the day.
