WARSAW — The strike at American Axle is affecting another local employer. Explorer Van in Warsaw has temporarily laid off 175 employees. It's the first layoffs there in 27 years.

The company customizes both Ford and GM vans, but most of its business comes from GM vans. It's not getting vans to customize because GM factories are not getting the parts to make them.

“This is our most profitable time of the season, this is when we sell the most vans, this is when we make the most vans,” said Steve Kelser, president of Explorer Van.

But now, the factory is mostly quiet and relatively empty. There a few Ford vans that need to be worked on, but after that, 10 more workers may be laid off.

“We were running about 15 vans a day up until the middle of March,” Kesler said. “I started slowing it down then to try to stretch the vans out, but lo and behold, that didn't stretch them out far enough.”

Despite the bad economy and high gas prices, the company was still selling a lot of vans.

“The van business has been tough the last 10 years and a lot of guys simply gave up,” Kesler said. “We've been fortunate.”

That is until the strike. Kesler told WSBT News the layoffs will only last as long as the strike continues. The workers are eligible for unemployment and the company will pay for health insurance for up to three months.

If production resumes relatively soon at GM plants, it would take 8 to 10 days for production to resume at Explorer Van. But a month of production at the company has already been lost.

General Motors had to close two more plants Monday because of the strike. Talks between American Axle and the United Auto Workers in the eight-week-old strike are set to resume this week.

Think about it people. If we all work for min. wage we are all in the same boat. Food stamps and medicare are the only hope to survive. These people are fighting for all of us, as unions always have. I support them, even thought my husband and I are off work because of it. I am afraid and hungry, but not as afraid As I will be if big bussiness gets their way. I recently watched the movie "The river" It is history repeating those times. Support our unions. they are for our future.

to all that say auto workers are over paid and need to learn like the rest of us. Don't you really mean to say is learn to live like you we all have had the option of pursuing job choices so to blame those who actually got those joobs instead of corporate greed for the falling economy is just absurd. At sometime in our life we all have to realize it is up to us to make our way in life and stand behind each other and work on making this a better place to live for our children.

As an employee of a company. What is the number 1 rule. You are there to work for the owners to make them wealthy not the other way around. It seems like many have forgot how capitalism works. There are many post on this board that are obviously from those in unions. To them I say, you choose a career where you are over paid. If I can hire an illegal immigrant with no high school education to do you job. You should begin to question your worth financially to a comapany. YOU ARE OVER PAID

Unions have destroyed the auto industries. The loosers who join unions are just that. They picket like little cry babies with the "RAT" patrol when they they are the RATS. Will NEVER buy union as they represent communism which is not the values of America. To union members. Go to CUBA so that you can have fun with Fidel Castros brother.

I say since they are bringing down other companies due to this strike and causing other employees of other businesses getting laid off....FIRE THEM. If they are not happy with their company there are many unemployed "americans" who would love to support their family again. Most of them probably don't have more than a high school education that work at the plant. I am going to college for computer science and will probably make less starting out then they are wanting with a college education.

Looks like more companies will be moving out of the country - American Axle voted no. Can't we find another company to make the products this company made to keep those affected from laying off? With all the technology we have should't a backup plan be made and/or advisable? Lets work with what we do have in our country and keep it here - not let our work go to some other country. Just frustated with a lot of bad news all the time.

This whole thing is greedy crap. Not by choice, but do to rust in the wrong area making it unsafe, I will need to replace my 1995 Chevy, with only 133,000 miles with a new vehicle this summer. Between 1980 and 1995 I purchased 26 new cars and I have always supported America's big three brand of cars. However do to this stupid strike I will be looking at Hyundai & KIA this time around. Plus they have much better rust through warranties also.

To fed up. If it were not for the unions in this country then do you really believe anyones wages would be over minimum wage. I have worked in both union and nonunion places and I can tell you the union members work harder with more pride then most nonunion plants. it isn't the union that is stopping an agreement. Learn the facts & stop falling for the companies lies.

I believe that this strike will end badly. If the workers win the company will probably shut down and move elsewhere ASAP, you can't bite the hand that feeds you. If the company wins the workers still lose because first they offer early retirement and then probably stop hiring they they will double workloads hoping more will get fed up and quit, those left behind will be miserable.

HOQ is correct the unions are OVERPAYED and underworked! If you don't like the profits the company is making start your own company and take the profits yourself! The company is under no obligation to raise your salary because they make a profit. Its about time union workers learned to live on the same salaries the rest of us have to. THE UNIONS ARE THE PROBLEM!!

Remember NAFTA made it easy for companies to go where the cheap labor is. Remember this on election day. Vote for the lady whose husband created this mess, or the man that voted against it. If you aren't happy with what you make go get another job. I believe you have that right.

It's not either CEO or blue-collar. Sometimes, you're just not worth as much, and this is especially true in low or no-skill jobs. Get skills, people - you don't deserve $20 an hour to push a button or pull a lever.

GO BACK TO WORK!!!!!!!!!!! You have dragged everyone else down with you! I cant beleive 3,600 people can hurt this many people and dont even care about how many people you guys and gals have put out of work! Some of us have no choice but to work with average pay. I am sick of me and everyone else being out of work either go back to work or they should FIRE YOU ALL and take your union and cram it. New meaning of UAW to me is UNEMPLOYED AMERICAN WORKERS! SETTLE OR GET FIRED!

Lately corporate greed has been destroying us by moving to other countries and trying to reduce our income while ridicuously increasing theirs. American Axle workers need to stand their ground. Matter of fact, all Americans need to unite on this corporate greed problem or we'll all be history.

This strike is effecting people all around the country from the people who work at the rail cars, to the people who haul and deliver the cars to the dealers and the small dealers who need inventory to make their sales. It's a shame that greed could effect so many. With the economy in trouble, wages should not be going down and profits going up. The rich keep getting richer. How much is enough? I hope those CEOs think about the thousands of livelihoods that they are affecting w/ their greed.

Tuesday, Apr 22 at 12:55 PM Mickey wrote ...

How said that people don't consider that American Axle is being asked to cut their pay from 23.00 per hour to 11.00 per hour. What most people don't understand is that the CEO of this company is making 10 million plus options a year. Does that sound fair to you? How many people could 10 million support? That is the problem with our society today. At one time people were able to have a good job, support a family, contribute to society and live a fairly comfortable life, with a hard work.

Strikes are a last resort. Strikes are rarely if ever a 1st choice for anyone. Tell Dick Dauch to negotiate in good faith instead of slashing workers pay by up to 60%. Come on, you think he's going to take that kind of a cut?

I understand - I guess - that the workers at American Axle are striking for what they believe in but it has now affected way too many others. Maybe they should have done a slow down instead so others would not be so severely affected. Times are tough enough for all to have so many laid off on top of it.

Its sad to see such misery and dispare caused by American Axles insistance that the workers who helped build AAM into the very profible Global Corporation it is today, live in poverty so that they can increase their profits. http://groups.google.com/group/american-axle
