SOUTH BEND — A march that brings 2,000 people downtown South Bend was moved from Coveleski Stadium to make room for Sen. Hillary Clinton’s Saturday rally there.

The March of Dimes will begin its annual March for Babies walk at the College Football Hall of Fame instead.

Check-in is at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and the 5-mile march begins at 9:30. It also will end at the Hall of Fame.

Clinton, who will be making her third presidential campaign stop in the area Saturday, is set to speak at The Cove around 2 p.m.

But because of security concerns, a tent used for the March of Dimes event needed to be removed.

"We’re scrambling right now," said Tim Arndt, director of communications for the Indiana chapter of the March of Dimes.

Arndt said everything’s on track for the event and that moving it might actually help attendance, since the change in venue prompted news stories.

Officials at The Cove worked to find a new venue for the March of Dimes walk, said Amy Hill, director of sales and marketing for the stadium’s South Bend Silver Hawks baseball team.

Former Gov. Joe Kernan, president of the Silver Hawks, is a Clinton supporter and has appeared with the New York Democrat at numerous campaign stops.

Clinton’s campaign was willing to find another location for her rally if anyone from the March of Dimes wasn’t comfortable moving that event, said Jonathan Swain, spokesman for Hoosiers for Hillary.

The campaign announced Coveleski Stadium as the site for Clinton’s visit on Tuesday.

The March for Babies has been going on in the South Bend area since the late 1970s, said Arndt, the March of Dimes spokesman. About 2,000 people attend every year.

"It’s one of the biggest marches in the state," he said. "This thing could’ve been a real problem."

I don't think you blame her for this, although I do not support her. Joe Kernan and the SilverHawks do not understand what the word commitment means. He should have said to the Clinton people that we have commitment with the March of Dimes, but we would be happy to have you join the March. It might have been good for her campaign. Hopefully Kernan and the SilverHawks are doing everything they can to make the change as smooth as possible. What a shame...

I think it's terrible that the march of dimes who was already scheduled to start at the cove had to move. Why can't Hillary find a different place? Oh wait because Kernan has to help make a plug for his democratic liberal buddy. They should be ashamed! March of Dimes will do more to help society than Hillary will ever do.

Clinton should be ashamed of herself for having to have the mark location changed. This is for a good cause and Clinto should have moved her location to maybe New York.
