MISHAWAKA — A Penn High School student accused of planning a Columbine-style attack appeared in court for a detention hearing Friday morning, and authorities in Ohio arrested a suspect in connection with the threat.
Police arrested the 16-year-old at the school Tuesday after a resource officer found disturbing postings on the popular website MySpace.
He’s being held at the Juvenile Justice Center. Because of the severity of the allegations, the judge decided to keep the 16-year-old in custody.
The suspect’s mother and uncle appeared beside him during the hearing Friday morning. Both appeared to be very upset by the judge’s decision. Before the suspect was arrested, he was staying with his uncle.
The judge also ordered a psychiatric evaluation be conducted. The process will be split into multiple parts. First, psychologists will interview the suspect and his family. Then they'll review his police and school records.
"To understand what his emotional functioning is, what is his personality structure, and then the end piece will be looking at risk level — how risky he is to himself and to other people," explained Juvenile Justice Center Executive Director Bill Bruinsma.
The evaluation doesn't just help doctors treat the suspect. It will also gives prosecutors a better understanding of the kind of person they're dealing with.
“This is just another piece that we really need so we can make an informed decision that is in the best interest of justice for everybody as to what the appropriate path to follow is from here,” explained Deputy Prosecutor Eric Tamashasky.
The suspect is accused of discussing plans with another person to carry out a Columbine-style attack at Penn High School. He is being held on preliminary charges of conspiracy to commit murder. Prosecutors have until next Thursday to file formal charges.
Authorities near Cleveland arrested 33-year-old Lee Billi, who they say e-mailed the teen about conducting the attack. Their conversations included researching how to make bombs and obtaining a handgun.
Lakewood Police Chief Tim Malley says Billi was charged Thursday with conspiracy to commit aggravated murder.
Malley says he doesn't know how far along the two were in their alleged plans.
A computer was removed from Billi's home in Lakewood in a search Thursday.
Billi is being held in jail and is expected to be arraigned by Saturday.
