COBURG, Ore. (AP) — Monaco Coach Corp. is cutting 600 jobs in Oregon and Indiana.

The recreational vehicle company says the layoffs represent about 12 percent of its workforce. The cuts are roughly equal in both states. The company says the layoffs are among administrative and production employees.

Monaco announced the decision Friday. The cuts are effective immediately.

Monaco spokesman Craig Wanichek says it was a difficult decision but declining consumer confidence and rising oil prices have hurt business.

The Coburg-based company has gained market share in sales but says the overall demand for RVs is shrinking.

Put the blame on monaco for putting out such a shoddy trailer .I have a 2006 Presidential, its a 50,000 dollar piece of junk .You are right when it comes to management only thinking of themselves, not the consumers and not the employees .Look up KayToolson,s stocks and see who is getting richer .

Get a education people--the "trayla" factory is over. Who in their right mind would buy one, made from anyone who can pass a drug test. It common sense to use a screw gun.

I work for Monaco and I salute the decisions that upper management has made to keep the very best of it's work force employed. I find it insulting that a laid off worker is quick to lay blame on Tolsen and Yoder for their current work status. Odd that no one has mentioned that after this week of no production those of us that are left are going back to a 5 day work week. If you were laid off or demoted, look in the mirror and ask yourself why. Only the best survive, as it should be. Enough said.

Just mee truly gets it. That's what I mean by smart decisions are not being made...management who are are making the decisions are the problem, they remain highly paid believing that Indiana is the place where the cuts should be, look at the cost of getting product out west to build and then once it's built shipping costs to deliver from the west. With soaring fuel costs how smart is it to build in OR when the majority of industry is here.

E.S.here...worked at Monaco for about 4yrs.My wife just got laid off Thurs.(a giveaway to some)...Monaco has been building "open"(unsold coaches)for yrs.Parking lot's all over are full! When it comes to Monaco we can all thank Kay Tolson, Erv Yoder, and the other money grubing execs. They only look out for themselves and have lied to all! Now they left fine people and families dry, just to keep their own pockets warm and wet!Much better off without Monaco! It will get better!Just a matter of time...

its about time they take action with the high paid supervisors that do nothing, and now they finally have to earn their money like we do. IT'S CALLED WORK

What Monaco produces, costs into the thousands to sell. Plus filling them up with diesel fuel. I view these RV Buses as a retirement home to be driven to some southern oasis. Problem is, there are millions for sale and lots full of unsold ones. More layoffs to come.

I wouldn't blame the state alone, Monaco has always played a numbers game in regards of production output to make things look better than they really are. Even on the product itself I've seen them juggle the numbers on a unit when the weight one side was way too much to ship but shipped anyways. The final decision to ship it as is came from one of higher ups. Wonder if the customer that payed out hundreds of thousands of dollars have any problems it handling or anything?

Who can we blame? Our state has continually been on the path to destruction. The local and state gov't. are who we can blame. The companies here can only go so far, we were once the capital of the R.V. industry; greed and forced changes are hurting this state. Everybody needs to be voting, it is time the greedy politicians are replaced and this state is taken back by the people who live here. I wish everyone from Monaco and the others good luck, I lost my job last year due to a closing.

To the former employee that thinks smart decisions aren't being made, get a clue, it happens to be about the declining economy!

I worked at Monaco but got permanently laid off in January basically because I got injured and could not do my regular job because of permanent restrictions. I would never have been laid off before because of the job I was doing. I wonder how many others that happened to. I've said since last year this going to happen and kept saying more to come. I heard within a year that they will close all of Indiana down and move everything to Oregon but time will only tell. Good luck to all the remaining.

It's really sad, who do you blame?? Monaco can't help what the economy is doing to everyone, but when you work with these people everyday for years and you watch them being layed off it hurts everyone on both sides and you wish you could point the finger at something or someone and you just can't its really sad
