GOSHEN — A 10-year-old student at Harrison Christian School southwest of Goshen was hit by a bullet while on the playground Friday.

Investigators from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department think the shooting, which happened about 12:45 p.m., was accidental.

The school is in the country, near a wooded area.

Trevor Wendzonka, a spokesman for the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, said the injury does not appear to be life-threatening.

Capt. Sean Holmes said the small-caliber round went into the boy’s shoulder from a downward angle, making the possibility the bullet was a stray even stronger.

A woman who answered the telephone at the school but would not give her name said the children were playing softball when one of the students suddenly clutched his chest.

Other students had heard gunshots. When teachers realized the student had been shot, all the children were taken inside.

The woman said the boy was going to be all right. He was going to have surgery to remove the bullet from the area near his armpit.

The school is on County Road 11 west of Goshen.

The superintendent of the Wa-Nee Community Schools told WSBT News he kept all the children in his school district inside after he heard about the incident, until police gave him the "all clear."

Detectives are still trying to find out exactly what happened. Anybody with information is asked to call the sheriff’s department at (574) 533-4151 at night and over the weekend and at (574) 533-8644 during business hours during the week.
