SOUTH BEND — U.S. Sen. and Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama spoke at the St. Joseph County 4-H Fairgrounds Thursday.

The Illinois senator’s invitation-only appearance was for farmers, students and local activists from throughout the northern Indiana area.

His campaign called it a "Real Solutions for Rural America" town hall meeting. Obama used the opportunity to try and show that he is in touch with voters in rural areas and not just in the cities and suburbs.

There were about 100 people inside the Beef Club at the 4-H Fairgrounds. Many were Obama supporters, but others were undecided.

The audience listened as Obama talked about his agenda for rural America. He said he wants to provide incentives for young people to stay on family farms, promote alternative fuel sources such as bio-fuels, and invest in schools and other infrastructure in rural parts of the country to help it remain vital.

He said people in rural America reflect the best of American values.

"The fact that rural America is having such a difficult time indicates we've lost focus on our values and our ideals,” he told the crowd.

“I thought Senator Obama was very intelligent and reasonable in his comments,” said Gary Freymiller of Plymouth. “I appreciate his interaction with the crowd here today.”

After he left South Bend, Obama headed to North Liberty. He talked with people, drank a can of Bud and posed for pictures at the VFW hall. He discussed health care, the housing crisis and gas prices.

When he was asked about a possible vice presidential choice, he said he's not the nominee yet.

This is Obama's second visit to our area during the campaign. Sen. Clinton has been here four times, the most recent was Wednesday. She discussed gas prices with workers at Deluxe Sheet Metal in South Bend.

Observers say the race in Indiana is tight and the South Bend area could play a big role.

“I think of all the major cities in Indiana, South Bend is probably the most equally divided in voter preferences between Obama and Clinton," said Sean Savage, Saint Mary's political science profesor.

Clinton has been gaining support in recent polls in the state.

The news media has brainwashed Blue collered and Middle Class people to believe Oboma is an elitist. I feel stupid everytime one of the news commentators characterizes working folks as low class and un-educated. This is a political trick being employed by those who don't want Oboma in the White House. The news medias all of them are doing their best to make sure Hilliary is the nominee. I for one has not been brainwashed and will vote for the best nominee 1st and a democrate whoever wins

It's not that he's afraid of what S.B has to say; he simply does not care! He's made this abundantly clear with remarks he's made, the company he keeps and his total disregard for the feelings of his backers who were cheated out of an opportunity to see him in person. The only time he doesn't stutter is when he is reading something that was prepared ahead of time. He stutters on stage in an open enviornment because he either doesn't know an answer or because he can't keep his lies straight!

Laura: I understand that all of the candidates do both private and public meetings. I do not however feel that you can say that you are having a "town hall meeting" and then make it invitation only. Obama has been here twice and both events have been either ticketed or by invitation. Is he afraid of what South Bend has to say? He is not my candidate, but really neither is Hillary. I cannot support someone who doesn't want to hear what we ALL have to say and surrounds himself with extremists.

Most of you sound quite bitter. Stop voting against your economic interests! New video shows that McCain will keep us in Iraq for "a million years". Think about how much of that money could actually be spent here lowering our gas and food prices! Clinton will NOT win the nomination. John McCain will NOT win the election, and you republicans know it! That's why you are clinging to the only non-issue that you have; the views of another person that in no way reflect the views of our next President!

Elizabeth, both candidates do a mix of public and private events. This was a town hall geared toward veterans' issues, so veterans were invited. Obama does several public rallies every day.

Yesterday I went to the town hall meeting without a ticket. I stood in line and told the people I was not invited, but wanted to attend. After a few questions they allowed me in. It was a great experience. I am still voting for Mc Cain.

Forgive me if I am uninformed, but when I look up the words Town Hall Meeting on Wikipedia it says "an informal PUBLIC meeting" and "where everyone is invited to attend." Seems to me that it is an oxymoron to use the words "town hall meeting" and PRIVATE in the same sentence. Why was it private? Does he not want to hear what we have to say in Indiana. Mark my words, I will be speaking on Tuesday Mr. Obama.

I wonder how many of you who put Obama down for Rev Wright support Pat Robertson and the like. I have heard many worse things come out of his mouth. But that is alright because he doesn't say it with the passion of Rev Wright. I wish some people would venture out of their neighborhoods, state, and country. You would learn a lot about of communities and cultures.

Oh yeah, and she promised us 200,000 jobs in upstate New York--nada, she will say or do anything to get elected. VOTE OBAMA!

Why was the mayor of South Bend not at the meeting? He does no appearances. Makes one wonder about his ability to run a city. No wonder we have so much crime.

Thursday, May 1 at 6:00 PM Anonymous wrote ...

Both of Hillary's Public Appearances were w/o ticket---meaning, you didn't need a ticket to get in. Hillary's other two appearances were done at "private businesses" hence the reason it was a private event. Obama's first event required a ticket to a less than 'respectable' part of town. Obama's second appearance was by 'invitation' only. There's a big difference. BIG DIFFERENCE.

Now I know I will not vote for Obama. He even thinks that we are a rural area. Excuse me, sir, but we are urban, and 4H is also an urban organization. Why in the world would he give a speech or policy at suck and urban area. There must be more urban in Indiana than this area. He just felt, because his people probably was crying that clinton people have been here numerous times and he has only been here once.

When Obama says he didn't support the war in Iraq, he was the Ill1nois State Senator. He has only been a US Senator for 3 years. His Paternal Grandfather was a wealthy farmer and his father was raised with privlage. His father was not a goat herder. His Father and Paternal Grandfather were both radical Muslins. He went to Rev Wright's chuch for 20 years and never heard those disguisting comments, give me a break, did them Rev. Wright only say those things when he wasn't there.

The level of intellectual discourse absolutely astounds me as to the eloquence of the rational thought process and to the conclusions one reaches in such a convoluted in choosing whom to vote for. If you are an idiot, just say you will vote for McBush and not beat around the bush with your warped logic. If your are intelligent, there is no way one could support the Republican candidate. So vote your I.Q, not your tax bracket. Remember, stay in school. A mind is a terrible thing to be BUSHED.

Of course he doesn't care about the average person. Neither does Clinton. They are both out for one thing and it is themselves. All they care about is saying what people "want" to hear so they can get elected. some of the stuff they talk about doing they can't even do as president. Before you can President maybe you should understand the job and what you can or can't do.

Well I guess I'm not undecided anymore. Let the chosen few that receive get invited vote for Barack and I'll vote for someone who seemed to have something to say to everyone. I've said all along this guy was riding on fashion. When it comes to the real issues he 'uhs' himself all over the stage and doesn't manage to say anything. He wouldn't debate Clinton because he could reach more people? Do you think we're that stupid? You won't debate her because she'd bash your brains out again one on one!

Obama's elitist attitude is sickening. People are going to vote for him because he "speaks to them." PUHLEASE! The guy wants to tax the rich into oblivion and give back to the people who are too lazy to get a job. NOT FAIR!

So, it seems to me that Obama does not want people to attend his appearances. He expects them to get tickets or be invited. He doesn't care about the average citizen. I'm not saying that Hillary does either but let the public in to hear this "town hall meeting". PS I thought Town Hall meetings were open to the public normally.
