THREE RIVERS — Thousands of union workers at American Axle have been on strike for two months.

A worker in Detroit says a settlement is in the works that could include reduced pay, buyouts and buy-downs.

But United Auto Worker negotiator David Morris says he doesn't know where that information came from.

Workers on the picket line in Three Rivers have heard rumors and are waiting for news.

"We have a feeling and a belief that what we are doing is right and every time someone honks and waves, it makes us feel better," said Scott Simon, an American Axle worker.

He has stood outside the American Axle plant in Three Rivers with other workers for two months picketing and waiting.

"You sometimes wonder. You hear so many rumors," said Jay Schleiman, another worker.

Recent rumors including talks that a possible settlement would reduce wages from $28-$30 an hour to $17-$25. In exchange, American Axle would pay each worker $90,000 over a three-year period.

"Rumors are strictly that. They're not fact, so we don't have anything to base it on at this point," said Schleiman.

But Detroit worker Ken Krzycki says union officials gave him specifics.

"I heard they finally came to hopefully an agreement that they are going to announce shortly. It's going to be 3 years of buy-downs at $30,000 each year, $140,000 buyouts if you want to sever all your ties with the company," he said.

The company has said it needs to reduce wages to stay competitive.

Morris would not comment on the status of the negotiations but he hopes to have a deal worked out in a few days.

People in Three Rivers say they're ready to get back to work, but not if wages are cut 50 percent.

"A 50 percent cut is not reasonable," said Schleiman.

"I would prefer to go back under the right conditions," said Simon.

And they're ready to stand their ground for as long as it takes.

The American Axle strike has taken a lot of other workers off the job, losing dozens of GM plants nationwide. More than 600 local people were laid off.

The Explorer Van plant in Warsaw laid off 175.

Mishawaka's H2 plant laid off 400 workers at the beginning of March.

NylonCraft laid off 80, but brought back half of them.

Company officials there say if the strike ends, it will take them a few days to get back to full capacity.

How does NO ONE in the UAW seem to realize that they are striking themselves, and THOUSANDS of others, (like myself) out of their jobs? I have nothing to do with this strike and live and work halfway across the country, but half of our company has been laid off because of it. Maybe when I'm in Detriot next week I'll have to drive by AAM and snicker. Maybe my honking will make you feel better, but take a good look at the expression that is going to be on my face. GO BACK TO WORK.

What so many seem to forget is that all UAW members have had happen over the last several contracts have been concessions on our part. Example: Everybody seems to think we have great bene's. Since the company's say their cost for our "great" medical bene's are so high it's interfering with profits, I wonder why we all pay 100% out of pocket to see a dr.-as in we're not covered. They say it costs THEM more, yet WE pay the price. And wages-let someone take half your pay-then talk your talk.

I don't know what it is,but i tell you this right now.If ever YOU or ANYONE may be in need, may need back up or support ,I am looking the other way - I am no longer giving donations, or offering help. I wonder if the people laid off through the trickle-down effect care one bit about your kids' braces and sports. Really, these are luxuries! I think the execs should also be willing to compromise, but that is harder to do since there are probably contracts that have to be met. They have bills and kids in braces and sports, too. Everyone works hard, even the paper pushers. The US versus THEM mentality does no good! If you want a decent life, then go to work before all of the jobs wind up overseas

Het Steve o I have a college degree and have worked both sides of the fence. I would take a good blue collar job with a union involved over a white collar job any day. Come on people, look at the facts. They just want to keep what they have right now as a minimum. Whats wrong with that? Its been my experiance with Dana Corp. that once the companies get one concession from you they just keep wanting more. Stay strong union brothers and stand up for what is right.

Friday, May 2 at 4:25 PM white collar man wrote ...

Get over it ! The union has punished its own people by striking. Don't complain about the high cost of vehicles. Remember, you wanted the big money to do your jobs. Now what do have to show for it. Most members of front line supervision make less than the line workers. Give me a break. The general population in the US does not make 28 or 30 bucks and hour. Tell the guy who works in a textile mill all day for 8 dollars and hour and see what his response is for your "need to live" is.

ignorance is killing the middle class. Justify some of your wages and benefits. They are often ridicules. Striking will prove what? Another factory/plant closes-moves. And you all pay a Union for that right to lose you jobs, homes, cars, lives, kids education. Work and talk and earn. Earnings better then NOt. But ohh no we got to affect thousands of folks lives. Keep up the good fight.

The company knows it's bad all over and can replace the workers. Why else would they think they can make that big of a cut in pay? What makes the average job at American axle easier than say the paper pusher at the top making hundreds of thousands dollars a year not to mention all the extras they get? Do people realize how much money it takes to raise a family these days, put the kids through school, get braces , buy the equipment for school sports, etc...? Not enough room to list everything.

I'm laid off due to AA strike and I hope they keep up the good fight until they stop big industry from killing the middle class. I work at Delphi and lost half of my wages but the CEO's never took a pay cut and are still getting six figure bonuses on top of their pay. Did you notice the cost of vehicles being reduced due to our pay cuts. Neither did I. Wonder where all that money they're saving is going? Get smart America - the rich are still getting richer and the middle class is now poor!

I work in a union shop and get to watch the whitecollar workers. These people make great money, not as much as me but then they don't really toil all day. They arent beat after an 8hr day. Most don't work the weekends. And none of them have to live with the chemicals we floor people have to. We deserve our pay. Good Luck to you American Axle people. Stay strong.

One thing the people running down these union workers need to understand is that this strike is not caused just by the workers. I don’t hear their executives say they will take a pay cut, even though their wage increased at a rate of about 300% or more compared to union workers. I’m sure these workers demands were not unreasonable; the company could end this strike just as easy. Let their highly paid executives take a pay cut too.

I just want it to be over already. Enough is enough. Get this business settled once and for all. I know why you are on strike and I am for the blue collar to get improvements as we are all suffering. I think the government should step in and set a law that if AA wants to work in America they need to keep up with the time. I also think imports are not the way to go. America need to be self suffent again. GO BACK TO WORK ALREADY!!!

Look at the trickle down effect of your strike. Even Explorer had to lay off over 175 personnel. Hope you are proud of all the down to earth hard working people you are screwing. I just cannot seem to muster up sympathy for someone making $19 an hour, which is still a LOT of money. Especially when the quest for more money lost hundreds of other people their jobs through no choice of their own. The unions are shady nowadays, you are right, and I think they should be disbanded. And I am sorry if you are in financial ruin, I really am, but there are plenty of other people ruined as well who are probably worse off than you. I don't say that to be mean, just factual.

They do NOT get 30 or 50 an hour. My husband gets around 19/hour WHICH is the average for plants in the same tier as AAM (excluding Dana and Delphi who were in BANKRUPTCY!!!!) AAM/the UAW and GM colluded to get this to happen, in my opinion. GM got their inventories down, AAM gets their reduced to poverty wages and the UAW gets their union dues and their cut of the buyouts and buydowns. And the worker gets financial ruin...sounds like a win-win situation to me, huh?

Looks like greed to me, pure and simple. Hope ruining hundreds of families is worth it to them.

Hey American axle strikers, look at Conn Selmer. They have been on strike for two years, and a lot of them have gone back to work, with out any union. Gone are the days of the $50-75.00 an hour jobs with benefits. They have all gone to China and elsewhere, were goods can be manufactured for pennies.
