Both Jill Long Thompson and Hillary Clinton hold leads in their respective Democratic races, according to a statewide poll released Friday by the Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics.

Among 689 likely democratic primary voters, gubernatorial candidate Long Thompson of Argos has a 20-point lead over her opponent, South Bend native Jim Schellinger.

The poll shows Thompson with 53 percent of the vote, to 33 percent for Schellinger. Of those polled, 14 percent were undecided.

As for the Democratic presidential primary, Clinton has overtaken Obama, who had a 5-point lead in mid-April, according to the poll.

The latest poll cites Clinton with 52 percent of the vote and Obama with 45 percent.

The center said it is cautious to draw too many direct comparisons between the two polls, because both were separate samples of the Indiana electorate under different conditions.

The Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics is a non-partisan organization based at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.
