ELKHART — It started out as a typical Sunday afternoon for Jody Coleman.

"I'm sitting at home online, just dealing with a new pet. It starts barking and I look out," she explained.

And this is what he saw: a swarm of cop cars, a line of buses, and flashing cameras.

"Then I'm on the phone talking to my mom, saying, 'I think Barack Obama is on my street corner!' And she's like, 'Really, are you joking?' And I'm like, 'No I'm not joking!' So it's a once in a lifetime opportunity," said Coleman.

Sen. Obama, along with his wife and daughters, canvassed the streets, going door-to-door to gain support.

Obama's campaign says small, intimate stops like these are important. It gives the senator a chance to have a conversation with voters and hear about the challenges they face.

"When my truck used to cost me $25 to fill up, now it's costing me $65 to fill up to go to work for a week. You know 15 miles away, there's obviously something wrong," said Coleman.

"I work for the RV industry. We make the paint mast kits for the RVs and when they're slow, we're slow," said Elkhart resident Kristy Ecker.

The senator may have spent only a few hours with voters. But some say the effects of his visit will last a lifetime.

"He just shook my hand. It was amazing, something I never dreamed of, him being here. It's so cool," said Elkhart resident Brandon Beckwith.

"It makes the candidate much more tangible. And I think it works for him. I think people can say I actually met him and he is a real person. He's willing to come down here and see us and I think it's fantastic," said Elkhart resident Audra Smith.

After Obama finished canvassing he stopped by a nearby park to shoot a few hoops. Then he hopped on the bus and headed to Fort Wayne.

Obama-Clinton Guam Update 5-04-08 By David Swanson Obama and Clinton each picked up 2 pledged delgates in Guam this weekend. Obama now has 1,493 pledged delegates. Clinton has 1,334 pledged delegates. Of the remaining 404 delegates yet to be pledged, Clinton would need to win 282 of them to beat Obama. That's a victory of 70 percent to 30 percent. There is not a single political reporter in the country who considers that a *remote* possibility, and yet every media outlet covers this "race" as i

Thank you to those who convey nothing but nice thoughts and words about Senator Obama. It is apparent that the words are expressed by educated people who are able to make informed decisions about why they are voting for Senator Obama. The bottom line is that he is the one chosen from God to force a path of change across our country. And for those who are just haters, education is the key. It is obvious many lack it and that is one reason why this country is in a mess. Right George Bush?

I am in Va, hoping that Indiana and NC see the candidates in their true worth! Honesty, integrity and trustworthiness should be the gauge to measure our next President by. Both cadidates are highly intelligent, but which one uses his intelligence to find solutions to our issues and which one uses it in devious negative ways so to win the nomination "no matter what"?

FANTASTIC!!! It isn't always about a big pep rally, Eric. It is about meeting people and talking with them, not at them! I think going door to door shows Barack is a man of the people not a person who needs a crowd to feel better. Barack is the person for the job. He is not "politics as usual". It is about each one us taking responsibility for our country and he inspires people to step up and work for change instead of putting false hope in candidates who promises you everything.

hey sami... you buy into his rhetoric? lord help us. there's a difference between political idealogy issues (communism under JFK, et al) and religious radicalism. The former at least has hopes of coming to a resolution. The latter is not based on common sense. They (ie, the radical religious terrorist) want us dead. We are dead to them. Dead men leave no tales. Dead men cannot negotiate. When you Obama people figure that out, talk. Otherwise be quiet.

After the past 8 years I cannot see any reason why Barak is less of a candidate than George Bush. He is intelligent, has charisma, has education and did not buy his way through the system. He did not come from the Rodham clan and does not make 109 million a year. I am willing to take my chances, after the oh I was mistaken about the gun shots, Hillary is as much of a liar as bill. Gee, Anonymous, it's sad to hear someone so dismal when many of us are optimistic for the first time in years. Obama is disturbing to some people because he's not doing things the "DC" way. This form of a two-party limited democracy has been prevalent and ascribed to for far too long. Sit back, take deep breathes, in thru your nose and out through your mouth, and think of what you wish for our country's future. Then choose your candidate. Now let me be first to welcome you to the obama camp.

We are in dire straits if this is the best we can do.
