ELKHART COUNTY — You've likely heard all about using recyclable materials to make houses, cars and food containers. Now some local RV manufacturers are becoming more environmentally friendly. Last year alone, RV companies in Elkhart County turned more than 2,000,000 pounds of landfill waste into new products.

When the manufacturers cut windows and doors from the sides of RVs, they used to throw the scrap pieces away. Now they stack them on skids and send them to Nappanee Window, Inc.

That's where employees work to recycle the scraps into compartment doors for the outside of RVs.

"We didn't set out to be environmental pioneers, that wasn't our goal," explained Nappanee Window Marketing Director Josh Kanagy. "By capturing this waste and reusing a lot of the material, it helps lower the cost of the customer for the finished product they buy from us. And it makes everyone more profitable, which is what we're all in business for."

Nappanee Window, formerly Nappanee RV Components, recently won awards from Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) for their recycling efforts. The company is now awarding its 14 partner manufacturers.

I really hope other companies start to consider this whole "going green" movement, because so many new jobs are able to be created from it.

We have owned three Class A Motor Homes over the years. Up until recently we discovered that now a system can be purchased to monitor tire pressure and tempeture. Not only does this give us security but why won't the RV companies make this a standard product? I think everyone is crying green way too soon, earn the title first and reduce emissions!

The need to recycle isnt what dive RV companies to reuse scraps - Its the need to match colors. If RV companies were serious about the enviroment, then there would be an actual commitment to it, not cry "GREEN" when the mood or atmosphere suits them. RV manufacturers are one one of the most wasteful industries in the area. Congrats Napanee RV on the award, but there is a long way to go before we can cry "GREEN" and give out awards. Just drive by one of these "green" RV Companies...

My husband works in the RV business and all I can say is that they need to give their employees more GREEN - cost of living goes up every year yet the pay goes down and they raise insurance premiums.

Going green is a term that us being used to liberally. What is green? How about getting rid of all of those dangerous chemicals the employees are exposed to everyday? Then you can say your going green. What your doing here is recyclying which is a good thing, keep it up..

The doors and sidings of RV's are not made of styrofoam, they're made from a type of fiberglass, or from aluminum. If you're seeing styrofoam, then that has nothing to do with what they're recycling. However, any recycling is better than none, though we could all do better by far!

2 million pounds that is not something to laugh at. That is some serious numbers. If you look at the picture most of the product is styrofoam and that is not heavy. I would imagine a single axle dump truck full would weigh in at 1500 lbs. That is more then 1,300 dump truck loads that DID NOT go to the Elkhatr County landfill. Personally I think that is a great thing. GOOD JOB Nappanee RV!! Pat yourself on the back!

Not super impressive - I've worked in the industry and they still waste way more than they're saving. This doesn't balance it out, trust me. I guess it's a start though - keep it up!
