SOUTH BEND — Republican nominee Luke Puckett wasted no time letting voters know he doesn't agree with 2nd District Congressman Joe Donnelly.

Puckett won the race with 48 percent of the vote. Joseph Roush came in second with 36 percent, and Tony Zirkle pulled in 16 percent.

Puckett began his acceptance speaking thanking supporters and then turned his attention to Donnelly's record and made it clear that he isn't afraid to attack it.

Donnelly says that is Puckett's way to get attention. Rather than attacking, he says he's going to focus on doing his job.

Jokes were exchanged as Puckett watched the returns come in from his Marriott hotel room. But two hours later, the votes were tallied and a fighter emerged.

"We are going to go after Joe Donnelly," he said.

He invited Donnelly to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) this summer and challenged him to find a fault in his plan to drill for oil there.

"I want you to point out to me there why we can't drill for our domestic energies," said Puckett.

"If Mr. Puckett wants to go up there, that's fine with me. I'm here in Washington taking care of my job and doing it every day for the people of this district," said Donnelly by phone.

Donnelly says drilling in ANWR could be a viable option.

"We have the opportunity to get between 7 billion and 17 billion gallons of petroleum out of there, so it's certainly something to look at," he said.

But he says it could take 20 years and families need relief now.

"I'm the only one who said we should start selling off oil that's in the strategic petroleum reserve. If we take those steps, we can drop prices right now," said Donnelly.

Like their pump plans, both candidates have very different fight plans.

"I'm not going to hold any punches. I'm going to state it how I believe it," said Puckett.

"I'm going to try to focus on doing my job," said Donnelly.

Both candidates say they are also focusing their campaigns on health care, bring troops home, and keeping jobs in Indiana.

Puckett was the Republican winner Tuesday night, but Zirkle says he considers himself a winner as well because he got people talking about his issues.

Giving away free gas shows Puckett "swell guy", but it has nothing to do with "fixing" the problem. Neither will drilling in the ANWR. 1995 the US Geological Survey gave an est of .9 billion barrels of recoverable oil in ANWR. The Energy Information Admin (EIA) estimates that if given a green light, it would take 7-10 yrs before that production would start. The US daily consumption is 18 mil barrels a day. This means the ANWR oil would equal 9% of our yearly usage. ANWR is NOT a solution!

It's going to be a good race, with a district that is split along party lines(2 or 3 dem counties, and 2 or 3 repub counties). Good luck to both Rep. Donnelly, and his worthy challenger.

"The experts call it a sweep." The experts might want to brush up on the meaning of that word; Pucket lost to Roush in 5 of the 12 counties in the district, and lost to both Roush and Zirkle in Howard. You don't lose half the counties and "sweep".

Donnelly supporter...what are you talking about? Roush didnt win this race..didn't even come close. Puckett won it. I would not call a 48-36 percent lead small. The experts call it a sweep. I can see why you support Joe..you both think small. He is done. Should of spent more time working for us instead of his passport stamps and camping out at his aunts house.

There is no way Zirkle would of won. He is not very well respected in his own legal community. Dubbed Zirkel the jerk. Luke is a great guy and I believe would do an awesome job for us. Donnelly was asleep at the switch till the final months when he suddenly was everywhere and finally starting to do something instead of wasting out tax dollars on needless trips. He had no business as a junior congressman spending tens of thousands flying to Iraq. 99 percent didn't even know who he was.

Donnelly has the fall wrapped up already. The GOP candidate only beat Roush 48-36 and that was with the full endorsement and support of the party. Roush didn't even break $200!! If Zirkle hadn't committed political suicide with talk of segregation and speaking before a Nazi group he would have gotten a large percentage of Roush's vote and maybe some of the other guys.

Zirkle is correct. We certainly did talk about the issues he raise. I wish I could have seen a debate on them. The Repub. vote turn out was so low, many indeps and repubs voted in dem. primary, so I'm not sure who would have been the Republican winner if more had voted.
