Mishawaka Police have identified a man who died in an accident on Grape Road Tuesday night.

Authorities said Nicholas Bernardi, 21, of South Bend, was driving a motorcycle in the 4600 block of Grape Road about 8:15 p.m. when a car driven by 17-year-old Shawna Fisher, also of South Bend, pulled out of the Outback Steakhouse parking lot and collided with the southbound Bernardi.

Bernardi was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, his fiancee Dawn Price, 36, of South Bend, was taken to Memorial Hospital with serious injuries after she was thrown 115 feet from the bike.

Fisher sustained minor injuries as a result of the accident.

Police told WSBT News Wednesday that Bernardi may have been traveling between 80-100 mph at the time of the crash. They are investigating the possibility that he was racing two other motorcycles.

Police say they do not believe Bernardi knew the drivers of the other motorcycles, and they fled the scene at the time of the accident.

“We want to talk to them,” Spencer told the Tribune.

Hundreds of people filed out of Grape Road businesses and watched as police worked the scene. All four lanes of Grape between Day Road and Edison Lakes Parkway were closed for more than two hours.

Andrew Teeter was in the Outback parking lot when he heard engines revving. He saw the motorcycle go 20 feet in the air, he said.

Authorities are asking any witnesses to call Capt. Tim Spencer at (574) 259-2966 if they have not yet spoken with police.

From reading everyone's comments I can see that everyone has their own opinions about what happened that evening, but I think about how easily this could have been me in that car or how it could have been one of my family members on that motorcycle. It's not left up to me to make judgements but I know that in either situation I would feel loss and hurt. I hope that all involved and their families not take the bad comments to heart but know you are in many people's thoughts .

You know I have people pull out in front of me that never actually come to a complete stop before going. A sort of running stop and yet I'm the one thats a danger when I always come to a complete stop before pulling out. Anyways you see "a tad bit" of my point LNM.

I dont see how at 90 mph that the fiancee would have lived and seems like she would have been thrown farther than 115 ft. maybe I am wrong but I dont think he was going that fast. they just wanna make the rider look like he was in the wrong. 8:15 pm the sun is starting to set and your cant see a headlight coming at you, then you shouldn't be driving. and yes if he was doing 90 mph he should not have done that but I dont believe he was. That same accident could have been fatal at 40 mph.

1 mph isn't wreckless driving, but when you said that if someone "wants to go 100mph or race on the street they should be able to after all it is the land of the free!" that was a tad bit more than 1 mph over the speed limit.

Hey LNM are you saying that you never ever go 1 mph over the speed limit so that people feel safe when you drive? That's your right, but the rest of us americans are going to speed!

Wayne, although people supposedly have the "right" to speed down a street, the rest of the people on the road have the right to feel safe and not in danger of people that are speeding by them.

Everyone should just stop with the negative comments. Jay, none of us have problem with accepting responsibility if it's our fault. We fall over or we're being stupid, that's our fault.Someone in a car pulling out in front of us, flicking a cigarette out a window, merging into the side of our leg, not our fault. These are the types of things we deal with everyday we ride. Most of us are very careful in town for these very reasons.I have avoided getting hurt numerous times because I am constantly watching for them.Like I said before, fault lies w/both.

Speed? I know for a fact, I wasn't going over 35, when I laid my bike down. But the woman behind me, told police it was well over 65. Most people assume, if it's a sportbike, it has to be speeding. If you are not sure how fast a vehicle is going, don't pull out in front of it. And don't ever assume it can stop. When you get out on the road, in any vehicle, pay attention. May-be then there will be less of these tragic accidents.

Even if the motorcycle was speeding, it doesn't change the fact the car pulled out in front of the bike. It doesn't change the fact the bike had the right of way. Yes, she has to live with it. But at least she is alive to live. My brother was killed at 20 when someone didn't pay attention and pulled into his path. He had the right of way,he wasn't speeding. Even after 20 years, it still hurts like hell. Quit blaming the dead boy, and teach people to look for motorcycles. We have a right to ride.

If going 50 mph over the speed limit isn't speeding, then I have some swamp land for you Kelly. Speeding is going over the speed limit (ie the allowed speed for a given road). No. And, you can try to pull the "I wouldn't have allowed him to speed" game if you want, but we all know how it goes. Plain and simple, if it had been another car, perhaps another kid, we wouldn't be arguing who was at fault. You would be on the opposite side of the fence. I don't remember anyone blaming the plow truck driver. We all need to take a defensive driving course if you ask me. We need to always think one step ahead and assume that someone will pull out in front of us

What I have to realize is that it is just not only my life I am risking, but the lives of others and I could be held responsible for my actions.

90mph is not speeding but reckless driving. My husband has been driving a motorcycle for 30 years, andhe will tell you that as a biker you have to be double careful and assume all cars are going to pull out in front of you. They still have to follow the same laws as the car drivers, and yes they are harder to see so bikers should take extra caution.

I agree a helmet would have not saved this guy, doing the speed limit would have.

Think of it this way: If a baseball catcher has caught 1,000 consecutive 40-mph fastballs, he would expect No. 1,001 to be 40 mph also. He'd have to have incredible reflexes to catch No. 1,001 if it was thrown between 90 and 100 mph without warning. I don't think the poor girl driving the car had a chance of either seeing or avoiding the motorcyclist as she pulled into the street. If the reported speeds are accurate, even the most seasoned driver would likely have suffered the same tragic fate.

Face the simple facts people, the driver of the car was not at fault, I would think it difficult to tell the speed of a motorcycle, that is why you look once for a car and twice for a motor cycle. I feel for the families affected by this, but do you all really want a 17 year old girl living the rest of her life thinking she was the cause of someone's death. Let's remember she was okay and needs this time to heal, not here how others think she caused this whole thing.

I am sorry for the loss of his life but that fell on his shoulders not hers.

Indiana law states that if you are in an accident and are driving recklessly (alcohol, excessive speed, etc) you are at fault even if you had the right away. In this case, the driver of the car should file a cival suit against the deceased (if we was living at home, he would be a dependant of his parents, and therefor go after them) he was far over the standard reckless driving charge and therefor would be liable both financially and criminally. Criminally biker should be charge with battery

Both parties had some fault in this accident. Yes, the driver of the car should have yielded the right-of-way, and needs to look for bikes. With that said, the biker should not have been going 90mph on Grape RD. Going 10mph over the limit (as many of us do) is one thing, but going over twice the speed limit is reckless. Had he not been going this fast the driver would have been able to better gauge whether she could enter taffic or not.
