MISHAWAKA — Drivers say the shopping district in a stretch of North Grape Road is extremely difficult, even dangerous. Left turns are especially tough because drivers have to cross three lanes of traffic.

Tough, dangerous, difficult and unsafe: that's how many drivers describe Grape Road. Those words should look familiar if you've ever tried to turn left onto the busy city street.

Randy Bystery told WSBT he drives on Grape a couple times a week. He said he sees cars who get halfway across the road, but have to stop in the middle for oncoming traffic.

Candace Brown agreed.

"All of a sudden you'll have someone turning right while you're turning left," she said Wednesday.

Mishawaka police Lt. Tim Williams said officers respond to more crashes on that stretch of Grape than anywhere else in the city.

"You're actually trying to cross two lanes of traffic," he explained. "And if there's somebody in the turn lane you've got three lanes of traffic."

Instead of taking that risk to make the left turn, Lt. Williams suggests first turning right onto Grape Road, then turning left into the next stop light or business to get yourself turned back around.

Turning right could also save time. WSBT clocked five cars trying to turn left out of the Lowe's parking lot. It took anywhere from 29 seconds to 1 minute, 30 seconds.

"Then you feel bad because of the people waiting behind you," said Candace Brown.

But are there any solutions to the problem?

Brown suggested making a left turn illegal.

Lt. Williams said that probably wouldn't work.

"If you put up a sign saying 'no left turn,' trying to make it something you can enforce, you're going to have a hard time [enforcing] it," he explained. People are going to do it anyway.

Everyone agrees that part of Grape Road will stay dangerous as long as drivers keep turning left.

Mishawaka Mayor Jeff Rea told WSBT the city knows Grape Road can be difficult for drivers. Rea agrees drivers should turn right as often as possible. He also said city engineers learned from Grape Road when they built Main Street — pretty much eliminating left turns out of businesses there.

Why don't they just tear down the whole mall etc. The area was prettier as farm land! I don't go there because too many people do not drive like they have a lick of common sense!(even in areas not by the mall) It's just common sense, if you don't want your vehicle recked, don't go there!

Agreed, if you can't handle grape road, take the bus. Did all of the complainers grow up in the sticks or what? Don't try to drive downtown Chicago, you guys would wet your pants and cry.

Terible idea. If you did that, Either all traffic coming from the north on Gumwood, or all traffic coming from the north on Grape would only be able to turn right or left..creating a heck of a mess on said roads and SR 23 intersections.

This whole Grape Road mess is the County Highway's fault. Not, mishawaka. County Highway is to blame. (nyuk nyuk nyuk)

Lets all just drive more carefully, and yes I agree with the comment above "Stay off the Cell Phone" and pay attention to your driving and the other guy, maybe there won't be so many problems.

Hey anon, that's because SR13 is a "STATE" Road... Grape is not.

What about all the morons who drive 60mph on Jefferson and try to make two lanes each way. NEWSFLASH: Jefferson is one lane in each direction.

Get off your cell phones and it is not quite so dangerous. I have not had any problems there..you just have to be patient and pay attention.

Idiot drivers make grape road dangerous. Get rid of them, you solve the problem. Oops, I forgot they are all around. Common sense.

HERE IS AN IDEA, MAKE GRAPE ROAD A ONE WAY NORTH AND MAKE MAIN ST. A ONE WAY SOUTH, THEN NO ONE WILL EVER BE TURNING LEFT ANYWHERE AND IT WILL OPEN UP 5 LANES FOR EACH DIRECTION.. EASY ENOUGH RIGHT..LOL

Why not be smart and try shopping in South Bend and other nearby communities. Besides the mall is not very enticing anymore. it too is dangerous.

There is no need to make a left hand turn out of Lowe's. Go to the street beside Fridays and use the stoplight. Use the lights to your advantage and be much safer.

I guess some people are just too eager to get to the next store and spend their money. It always seemed to me that most of the problems come from Granger with the attitude and yes I used to live in Granger and I'm glad I don't live there anymore. I have 2 family members moving out of there and two more that have already moved out because it's a big mess over there especially in Granger itself.

If you are patient, it really isn't a big deal. I can usually turn left, except at Christmas time when traffic is heaviest. Be glad you people don't live in a big city, you would never make it there.

This is why I don't make left turns out of parking lots on Grape, not worth the risk.

As EV wrote, do as they do in Detroit. It's called a "Michigan Turn". Install a curb in the middle forcing a right turn. Then, go 1/2 a block and make a U-turn at the designated location which has a traffic light.Works great in Michigan! All businesses need a "right turn only" sign at their exits.

Thursday, May 8 at 7:15 AM Anonymous wrote ...

heres an idea: and how are they supposed to pay for that? They said that when they redid Main that was the plan. Perhaps if they got money the might work to reconfigure Grape in the future. But right now,I'm tired of dodging potholes. Fix those first.

I would certainly agree that this area of Grape is quit dangerous, and it's not by ant means the only dangerous aspect of it.Pedestrians have been largely overlooked in this, there are no walk-ways on either side of Grape Rd between Day & Douglas.People are walking in very dangerous conditions.I hope they will do something, because its a bad situation for anyone who dares walk on either side of the road going north or south.

Why not change some of those entrances to right turn only just like you did to Normanday Drive, so we now have to try and turn left on main street...

Me thinks Grape Road wasn't planned very well, with the intention of what it has become. You know what works great? Medians....they can be pretty, and prevent drifting into the opposite lane, and unsafe turns. By force.

Wednesday, May 7 at 9:50 PM heres an idea... wrote ...

why doesn't the city just make traffic flow a certain way by putting in curbs that only allow one way to turn-like at the chic-fil-a on ireland/31, you can only turn out onto 31 one way because the concerete curb will only allow that way--same as with the turn in and out at chic-fil-a and krispy kreme on main street in mishawaka...it would re-route left turns to the light instead-do the same at barnes and noble, etc, then you don't have to worry about "enforcing" it because its only 1 way to go

Wednesday, May 7 at 9:34 PM Diedre wrote ...

I hate turning left out onto grape because there is nothing scarier than having people gun their car at your minivan with your kids in it and hope they wont hit you. people are just rude anymore.

and the people turning left out of Lowes guess it would be to hard to go to the other end of the parking lot and turn right and go up to Main then to Edison,or go left between Lowes and Meijer to the traffic light..It's called common sense..To bad it died a horrible death long ago.

I've worked on Grape Rd. for 9 years and if people would slow down and relax instead of trying to race across traffic to get to their destination,it wouldn't be a problem..Don't worry the store isn't going anywhere.

Dan, if it saves your life or that of a loved one all the more better right? In that last year, going up and down Grape at least 4 times a week, I see yahoos pulling out in front of traffic to make a left all the time. I've nearly been hit twice within in the last month. It's worse at xmas time. Last weekend in fact, I was almost in a head on collision because someone pulled into the turn lane just as I was coming to a light to make a left.

Go to Detroit and see how they do it. You turn right, and then left at the intersection, with the light. It is much safer.
