SOUTH BEND — Three people were arrested earlier this week after they allegedly stole electrical cable wires from AT&T that the company values at $30,000.

Two men, ages 21 and 18, and a 28-year-old woman are accused of stealing the wiring from a tower in the 1400 block of Prairie Avenue on the southwest side of the city.

Police say someone noticed the suspects cutting wire from a large pile in the backyard of a home in the 1000 block of North College Street, where two of the suspects live, and called Crime Stoppers.

Police went to the scene, and an AT&T representative was later called out and identified the stolen wiring. Police say there were several 5- and 8-foot pieces of the wiring in a pile 3 feet high.

“Some of them were cut up,” South Bend police Sgt. Dominic Zultanski said.

Zultanski said the cable that was stolen is as thick as someone’s wrist, but thieves will cut through the insulation to get the actual wiring inside. An area scrap yard representative told police that amount of plain wire can be sold at a scrap yard for $10,000.

“This is way more than the average theft,” South Bend police Lt. Rick McGee said.

Copper prices have skyrocketed in recent years, and copper can sell for nearly $4 a pound.

A 15-year-old boy also was questioned, police said, but was not arrested.

James Seitz of 1st Source Bank indicated to me yesterday that 1st Source Bank's duplicate transations for Sunday May 4th debit card transactions for many many of their clients was affected by the regional Internet slowdown directly attributable to the theft of live copper from AT&T. This article doesn't say whether the copper was actually in use at the time of its theft. - LG

Scrapping is an honest living for most of the scrappers. They are not inferior people. I'd say they are very adaptable and inventive.

I wish they would hang the individuals by the neck with a few thin strands of copper wire. Those jerks knocked my internet access for two days.

They should issue scrap dealer permits and have a real time network for people who could report scrap theft that would tie into the scrap buyer. that way thefts could be instantly fed to scrapyards and maybe catch or deter more people.

Is this the same cable that "disappeared" when A T & T cable was cut in an apparent copper theft along a railroad line between South Bend and Portage? This happened April 25, and caused a major phone/dsl outage... Didn't these people think they would get caught after cheesing so many people off?

Maybe someone needs to put an end to scrapping to individuals. This should stop the crime wave on scrap.

why can this be sold? who would pay for it? how can a "scrapyard" claim they don't know it was stolen? who would just have cable "as think as your wrist" laying around as scrap? Thanks to the smart person who called the police! We need everyone to be watchful and stop these idiots! They are ruining people's things!
