ELKHART — A local family that found a burning cross in their yard is getting involved. They're working with the city and local NAACP chapter to ensure it doesn't happen to anyone else.

In 1999, Indiana was one of 11 states without a hate crimes law.

The NAACP worked to get one on the books after a man was killed in 1999. The Elkhart chapter gathered signatures to make people convicted of hate crimes ineligible for parole. The chapter's president, Ron Davis, says while it was a step forward for the state and city, there is still work to be done.

"The Williams family saga has taken a toll over the last several years culminating in a despicable display of cowardice," said Bradley Vite, a family friend acting as spokesperson.

Maggie and Adam Williams moved from Mississippi 15 years ago. They didn't anticipate awakening to a burning cross feet from their sleeping children.

"This incident has shocked and disturbed many," said Vite.

But out of the ashes, arose hope.

"Some good can and will come out of this sad and disheartening act of violence," said Williams.

The last hate crime was committed in 1999 when a man was killed for being black. Davis says good came out of it.

"We did a petition drive to have a hate crime law put on the books," he said.

And it worked.

"It could be stricter, but something was better than nothing. Hopefully someday they'll make it stricter," said Davis.

The NAACP is encouraging the FBI to find the person who did this.

"They are cowards," said Davis.

But despite it all, the Williams say Elkhart will remain their home because people have proven this is the city with a heart.

"People do want to show us that we really love your family and something like this. There aren't many people around here who feel like that," said Maggie Williams, who found the burning cross.

The family would not comment on any previous discrimination because of the FBI investigation.

The FBI has not released information about suspects or persons of interest.

Agents have already collected evidence, but they'll be back Monday to interview the family.

some people don't know what real pain and degradation is. some young people and some minorities, for example. I remember May of 1961, basic training at Lackland AFB marching around in 90 deg. humid heat, the DIs yelling insults, not allowing water then running around a parade ground a couple laps. I got out of step and our NCO kicked me in the keister so hard I cried. And this is minor stuff. So many people have suffered so much in so many ways, I hardly think a cross burning merits a Fed. case.

We sit back and we talk about our youth, but look at our adults. I hear people talking about interacial couples what makes them any different than any other couples. Our skin color only goes so deep. Deep down we all bleed the same color. These people should be in a mental institution they have a problem.

To Anon....um I disagree. Otherwise we would not be having these problems. Did you see this happen in any other state the week they voted. NO. I am tired of yahoos who say we don't need this stuff and it is happening in their own back yards. Indiana is so backwards and it is because of this type of thinking.

Hate crime laws aren't needed. The crime is the crime no matter what the reasoning behind it. Why is murder any worse because the person was killed because he/she was black or some other reason?

The thing of it is we are giving these low lifes media coverage and that is what fuels the fire even more. These cowards need to accept we are America and we have different races, sex and creeds and that will not change. We are all Heinz 57s and even if we are only white or only black we still have a chance of other race flowing through our family trees. Dont judge until you know the real truth. God loves us all. Why cant we all just get along?

Hey 'duh' didn't someone just get arrested the other day for screaming from the rooftops or actually he was singing so maybe that's the difference there so you might be ok. Anyway it might be illeagal so you should think twice about doing it and getting in trouble. Maybe if you just burn a big cross in protest that is ok they say.

You bring up a good point. So I did some research. Why is Indiana only 1 of 5 states without Hate Crimes Laws???????

First we hear that there are no hate laws in this state to protect this family. Then I hear the NAACP has to encourage the FBI to find the people who did this. Shame on every politician and police officer in this state for not being angry. I want the Williams family to know this I for one will not tolerate this in our community, state or country. I will scream from the roof tops if necessary. This is outrageous. I also think it is no accident this is done the week of the elections.

You are kidding right? This is some kind of hoax. This stuff isn't really still going on. We wonder why children are getting gunned down in schools. Look what we are teaching them. Americans? We call ourselves the ones they led and are proud. We should all be ashamed that we allow this kind of behavior to still exsist. There should be a war on hate and it should start right here. I hope these people that did this didn't breed. They are animals. They belong in a zoo.

Karma will always find you. If you hate you will get hate in return. The people you hate will be your keeper in the next life. You will get back in this life and the next what you give out. What if your child was gay. What if the doctor that could save your childs life was a black person. I really don't care who saves me from my burning car, I just hope someone would. Gays, blacks, or religions don't kill. Ignorant trival backwards thinking people do. I am white and we are the first to hate.
