SOUTH BEND — It's been one week since two men brutally attacked a woman in the Wayne Street parking garage. Now many people who work downtown are scared.

Police say they haven't made any arrests in the case. That's just one reason why people who park and work in the area are worried for their safety.

Margaret Treesh has parked in the Wayne Street parking garage for years. She said she was shocked when she found out.

Catheryn Wood told WSBT the attack took some of her security away.

And all the women WSBT talked to said they know it could've happened to any of them.

"Most of us came in within an hour to that happening and to know we were that close to a crime like that, we were petrified," Dianne Froehlke said.

Police say a 28-year-old woman was walking down the stairs to her office when two men attacked her with a knife-like object. She then ran to the elevator. After that she ran out an emergency exit and through an alley to the Key Bank Building where she works. There they called police.

"Something like this is going to frighten people," said South Bend Police Capt. Phil Trent. "It's uncharacteristic for the downtown area."

Uncharacteristic or not, people who park downtown are on edge.

Margaret Treesh carries Mace with her every day now.

"To protect myself, it's loaded and aimed and ready to go," she said.

Mark Warlick said some of the women who work in his building are looking at self defense classes or ways they can be safer.

Catheryn Wood told WSBT she peeks around corners now.

Police did step up patrols this week, but is it enough to keep everyone safe?

Treesh said even with the extra patrols, police don't necessarily have sight of the stairwell (where last Friday's attack happened), because the officers are often just sitting in their cars.

With or without security, many people will keep looking over their shoulder wondering who might be attacked next.

Read a memo the KeyBank building manager and building owners sent to tenants after the attack.

Police say they're still getting lots of tips and leads from the community. Investigators are also still checking surveillance cameras from downtown businesses. Police told WSBT there aren't any cameras in the parking garage where the attack happened.

Here I am again with my 2 cents worth. People have been robbed and harmed in these city garages forever. You just don't hear about it. The city or who owns the garages has the DUTY to patrol such for the safety of the public. How many more innocent people will be harmed by these crazies until something drastic is done?

Worried senior the police are empowered. The police can not be everywhere all the time. It's up to you to defend yourself when they are not. There is a thing called “concealed carry permit” get one of these and a gun. If you don’t like and/or cannot use one at least get some pepper spray.

a year ago I turned 65 and started drawing SS payments. besides being officially old now, I have several disabilities which would make it difficult to defend against a raving thug with evil intent. things get worse yearly crime-wise. there's a lot of things the police could be doing. how about using souped up junkers as squad cars in traffic patrol? how about stings used for crime other than prostitution? the miranda act started this disrespect. the police need to be empowered and law enforced.
