LAPAZ — One person was killed and two others injured in an accident on U.S. 31 in Marshall County Friday afternoon.

Police say a car traveling northbound on U.S. 31 crossed the center line and struck a southbound SUV near 1st Road.

The driver of the car was killed. The driver of the SUV and her young child were taken from the scene by ambulance.

Witnesses to the accident helped the mother and toddler get out.

“Her feet were pinned really bad and she was very, very shook up and very scared and the baby was crying and pretty scared,” one witness told WSBT News. “And they both had pretty good seat belt marks. But as far as I know they're going to be OK.”

Traffic on U.S. 31 between Tyler Road and 1st Road was detoured until just before 5 p.m.
