SOUTH BEND — Rep. Joe Donnelly says everyone from a former president to his own family has given him input on who to support in the race for the Democratic nomination, but he still has not decided.

Donnelly is a superdelegate, a group of party leaders and elected officials who are not pledged to any candidate. Analysts say they could decide the nomination.

Donnelly says he talked with both Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama in Washington, just days after the contentious Indiana primary campaign ended.

“The conversations were to tell them how much I appreciated the fact that they came to our state on a constant basis, that they looked us in the eye, that they talked to us about the issues,” Donnelly said.

Both have been trying to get superdelegates on their side to gain an edge.

"The sooner that superdelegates make their decision, the sooner we'll have a sense of who the nominee will be and the sooner we can focus on John McCain," Obama said in Washington, D.C. Thursday.

But Donnelly didn't commit to either of them.

“I told them I would wait a few weeks to kind of try and add everything up and make a determination trying to make sure we do what's right for our country," Donnelly said. "And the judgment I'm going to make is who would be the best president for our country."

Obama campaigned for Donnelly in 2006 and has given thousands to his campaign this year, but Donnelly doesn’t feel any obligation to support him.

“I do not," he said. "I've spoken with both President Clinton and Senator Clinton. And so, I thought that she worked very, very hard in the state as well. Senator Bayh is a very good friend of hers."

Donnelly says in the end, the superdelegates may not decide the nomination at all.

“I think what's going to happen is the superdelegates will simply be a small add-on, that the decision is going to be made by the voters, which is the way it should be.”

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean has said he wants the superdelegates to make a decision by early June. Donnelly says he should have a decision by then, if not before.

Donnelly has already made up his mind. He is just milking this for free press coverage. He likes to be out in the public a lot more now that his term is almost up. Sure wish he would of done a lot more while in office. He taught all the veteran events, but he intact has only voted on four veteran bills in the last year and a half. He made sure to vote no to outlawing hate crimes for police officers and seems to like human cloning which he voted not to ban. Check out his record.

Why woild you give thousands to soemone you wouldn't support? “I do not," he said. "I've spoken with both President Clinton and Senator Clinton. I won't vote For Obama or anyone that ENDORSES him. Hillary's remark was not playing the race card, it's a matter of fact! If Obama were not black she would have locked up the nomination before McCain did. The reason Obama is where he is is because of those who never voted before are coming out the woodwork and voting now and the majority of them are black or first time voters. The reason Obama will not be president is not because he is black, it's because McCaimn is white. That's a fact Jack!

Why does everyone in this county hate the Repulbicans? Get over 2000 already. By the way Obama just picked a union endorsement. NO Pacs, No lobbiest, hum. He will be just like every other politcian in Washington, drunk with power. The only way things can change is 1. Fire all of congress, 2, put term limits in for congress. 3. Out law all pacs and lobbiest, and finially the goverment pay for all campaign expenses. Only then you will have change.
