VALPARAISO (AP) — A former firefighter was sentenced to 28 years in prison Friday for repeatedly having sex with a young girl and restraining her with handcuffs and straps during the attacks.

Michael Parsons, 39, could be released in 12 years or less with credit for time already served and for good behavior. Judge Roger Bradford imposed the maximum sentence.

"I hope in time I can be forgiven for what I've done," Parsons said during his sentencing hearing Friday in Porter Superior Court.

Parsons pleaded guilty in January to four felony counts including child molesting, child exploitation, sexual misconduct and criminal confinement in return for prosecutors dropping nine other charges.

He told the court he repeatedly had sex with the girl, who was under the age of 14, from Jan. 1, 2003, to May 6, 2006. Parsons allegedly took photos and put them on his home computer. In at least one incident, Parsons allegedly forced the girl to wear his firefighter's gas mask while he taped over the viewing area and stuck a sock in the breathing receptacle.

"You used me to fulfill your sick fantasies," the girl told Parsons in court Friday. She said she now suffers from anxiety and depression.

"I'm trying to fill this hole in me you've dug," she said.

Upon his release from prison, Parsons will be required to register with the state as sex offender.

Parsons resigned as a South Haven firefighter in December after being charged with choking a fellow firefighter during the department's Christmas party.

Any person who messes with a child should not be given any mercy! Just go to the grocery stores in South Bend and watch how the firemen act while they shop. Can't they shop on their day off and bring their food to work like the rest of us? Being a fireman should be a job of honorand wanting to serve and protect and not a job to flaunt.

The internet has become the devil's newest playground. It used to be televisions, before that cars, the telephone, every piece of technology we have invented turns out to be a major detriment to society because it invariably falls into the wrong hands. It goes all the way back to the Garden of Eden. But where will it end?

None of us deserve forgiveness because ALL of us have fallen short of the glory of God. That's what grace is all about. This man is answering for his sin- how would you feel, "throw away the key" if YOUR sins were advertised online? Think about that before declaring another unworthy of forgiveness and hope that God doesn't feel the same way about YOU!

I am sick and tired of guys on myspace and facebook using firefighter as part of their screen name and visiting teen girl pages. What kind of sick people are these? I had better not see one more on my nieces site.

12 years. Gosh. How am I supposed to care whether or not terrorists destroy America when there is nothing good here to defend?

Wait. Wait a minute. Someone like this can be released? Ah. Well. There goes the last little piece of respect I ever had for the system. To hell with you.

A child molester should always be charged with murder. In committing such a heinous act, they effectively murder the person that child was and could have been. She will always have this experience with her. It won't go away in 10, 20 or 30 years. He should stay in prison until she says he can get out.

Forgiveness for what? What would you say if it were you that was raped repeatedly. It happened to me and nothing was done. So, until you have walked in these shoes do not say anything about forgiveness, that takes time and help from God.

Is 6 yrs long enough. A 12 yr sentence is only 6 served. The young lady will still being healing. I hope she will be able to have a good full life in time. If someone should do this to a person - it would be very helpful to remove private body parts -I hope in the years to come the people do not claim for this act to be a disease.
