SOUTH BEND — Several women faced their fear of handling a gun at a training session called Women on Target in South Bend Saturday. It's a training session that skims the surface about owning a firearm.

"We had a problem with some dogs in the neighborhood and I had to go after them with a couple sticks, I was able to get the dogs to run off but if I had not or they had been attacking something if I had a weapon it would be nice to grab it and use it with confidence and safety," said Lynn Patrick of South Bend

The class is a first step for women who don't want to be afraid to load, point, and shoot.

"My neighbors had a break-in a couple of months ago and I was so worried, my husband bought the gun but I don't know how to use it," said Yuko Dehays.

Members of the FOP filled the tables with different types of guns to test out, from glocks to revolvers, or women could bring their own gun.

"A year ago I was in an attempted carjacking," said Elizabeth Mooney. And since then, she has been carrying a gun. At 82 years old she feels she could be seen as an easy target, so she wants to be ready in case there is a 'next time.'

"What would I do? I would take it out and use it if necessary," said Mooney.

Personal protection was just one of the reasons for taking the class.

Sherri Wilson doesn't plan on getting a gun, but she still wanted to know how to shoot one.

"It's on my bucket list, I'm going to be 50 this year and it's just one of the things I've been wanting to learn how to do," said Wilson.

Now that she has firearm training under her belt, it's time for the next big adventure.

"Next I'm going to learn how to ride a motorcycle, I already went whitewater rafting, I've seen the Grand Canyon, so we'll see, sky diving sounds pretty good," said Wilson.

The Women on Target class was so popular this year, it had to be divided into two sessions.

Yes read the stats swimming pool accidents account for triple amount of child deaths then do guns. Yes be knowlagible reas all the facts, pick up an NRA magazine and read how many old, young and innocent people have defended them selves with a gun. I just wish more old ladys would shoot the crack heads who attack them. Ask some people in other countries that cant have a weapon to defend them selves, OUR rights, join the NRA, you might be suprised how many women are. Good for them be strong girls

AM BT where did you get the impression thatwriter was talking about women. They were right on the money! There's not a problem with owning a gun and sure isn't to learning how to use it but to invite or encourage ANYONE to carry one for personal piece of mind is probably inviting disaster in more cases than it will resolve or correct an act of aggretion. Learn to read moron!

This is a good thing. Train, train and then train some more. Guns are great protection but only when used properly. Many people are killed each year by their own gun being taken away in a fight then used on them by the perp. It scares when people think that once they've learned "how" they don't need to train anymore. That will get you into BIG trouble.

(PM Yea, this is just what we ned!) who are you to decide these women should not own guns. According to the 2nd amendment they are. Good thing ignorant people like you are not interpreting our constitution.

HURRAH for these officers at SBPD. ALL genders should have a chance to learn how to defend themselves. The Police are great, but they are not with us 24/7. Good job SBPD.

I was wondering if anyone else was thinking what I did when I read the part about the woman who could now fend dogs off with a gun and feel safe doing it. I'm glad she can feel save, howabout anyone in the general direction of where she's pointing that gun in a stressed out situation. I am not for keeping people from having guns but what about the stats that say more innocent people will be injured by those guns than actual offenders? And are the woman at a greater risk themself?

So the SBPD is so caught up on crime and have such control over the already heavy volume of guns in the hands of people who should not have them that they have come up with a little promotion that will add another factor to the situation., Okay, so it's NOT the SBPD sponsoring it, just SBPD personell. I wonder how many gunshot wounds or fataly wounded children they will ahve to see before they try to GET guns off the street? The woman who has been fighting off Benji with stick..?

30 second nonsense has got to be kidding with the last sentence! NOTHING justifies firing a gun at another person unless you believe your life or the life of another is in immediate danger. If you can shoot to wound someone, you have other options than shooting that person.

Center mass is where to shoot not the knee. Most trained people have a hard time hitting such a small target.

Treat every gun as though it is loaded, even when you know it's not. The end with the hole is the dangerous part. Only point a gun at something if you intend to put a large hole in it. Adding a gun to a dangerous situation has the potential to make it deadly. Even if you have a gun, think twice before brandishing it, and only do so if you're prepared to use it. If you must shoot, shoot low: a bullet to the kneecap will stop an attack, but a bullet to the skull is murder.

This is a very good thing for anyone curious about guns to participate in. These officers from SBPD volunteered their time.
