GRANGER — Fire severely damaged a large home not far from the state line, northeast of Clover and Adams roads, on Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to 50752 Pickett Ridge Court about 12:45 p.m. Flames could be seen shooting through the roof of the house, which appears as if it could be a total loss, according to Tribune staffers on the scene.

One firefighter is reported to have twisted his ankle.

Crews from several area departments were called to help, including Harris and Penn townships, Clay Fire Territory, Osceola, Edwardsburg, Howard Township in Berrien County and Cleveland Township in Elkhart County.

Personally, the reaction of the community was very disturbing. There were cars parked everywhere, trying to see the house, the firefighters could barely get to it. Then, the amount of gaukers were ridiculous. I live three houses down, and there was so much traffic just to see the house that burned. I'm a family friend, and I bet that she didn't appreciate everyone coming to get a cheap thrill.

I too would like to know who built the home. sounds alot like the home that went up in flames on Shavehead Lake last year- twice to the same house!

I'd like to know which contractors built the house. You know, just wondering, is all. So I know who to avoid...

What a shame for this family. How devastating it must be to lose your home, family pictures, everything. My heart goes out to them.

Hey Niles, Real nice..oh yeah and classy. This family, like yours and mine probably worked real hard to get what they had and from the looks of the damage, more than likely lost everything. It's nice to see you can make such bold conclusions about someone you have never meet just because they live in Granger. Then you don't have the guts to sign your own name to your post.

This happend on Saturday afternoon. I was outside with my friends and then we saw more than 15 abulences and firetrucks go by and we could see smoke and it was really scary. These are the scary things in life! I was coming home from the Silver Mile at like 12:55 and I was more than 2 miles away and I could see smoke!! It would really stink if this happend to you. You'd lose everything you own and have nothing left but each other. I really hope everyone is okay!!! I think you all know what I mean

If this happened on Friday, why are they just now reporting it?

I was not trying to be cruel, I simply DO mean that considering where they live, they probably are smart enough to have homeowners insurance! It gets old, the amount of people who fires happen to who are begging for money because there is no insurance. Homeowner's or renters ins. is not that expensive to get, cheaper than tricked out cars or cel phones. Geeeez people, take a pill! As far as sentimental stuff goes, that is the hard part, that is irreplaceable. I still hope that everyone is OK!

I don't know which makes me more sad, the story or the previous comments. Where is people's compassion now days? I am sorry ANY family has to go thru a fire and destruction of their home.

You can take a loan up to seven times your gross income...don't say they are made of money...Will insurance cover a cigg left

Someone works hard to provide a nice home for their family and gets called out for it. They had a fire and probably lost many things money can't replace. You people are unbelievable...

The fire happened Saturday afternoon, not Friday afternoon.

Who cares how much $$ they may or may not have. How about a little sympathy for a family who lost everything. Class envy is so umbecoming.

Funny how people who make heartless remarks that show the true nature of their being never sign their real names. To make reference to people who have had devastating experiences begging for handouts is just cruel. I would rather give a "handout" than live with the fact that I may have been able to lend a hand and didn't. The feeling of being conned stays with me for about 5 minutes. Knowing I could have helped and didn't would stay with me for a life time.

yeah it looks like their made of money they should not have any problem replacing the house!!

I am sure that these people at least had insurance and won't be begging for handouts! I hope everyone is OK!
