A fire on South Bend’s west side kept city crews busy late Saturday as they battled the blaze.

The fire broke out at 502 S. Illinois st. shortly after 11 p.m. Dispatchers said a passer-by saw smoke and called 911.

No injuries were reported.

Responding units said flames were shooting from the home when they arrived.

Firefighters remained on the scene close to midnight.

Battalion Chief David Maenhout reports the fire was caused by a candle that was left burning.
