KNOX — An Indiana National Guard soldier who grew up in Knox was killed in Iraq. Spc. Joseph Andrew Ford, 23, died Friday in a rollover accident during a training exercise near Al Asad.

Ford was a gunner with the 152nd Calvary, part of the 76th Infantry. He was deployed in March.

His father says he was stationed in the turret, on top of the vehicle, when the accident happened.

His family was notified Saturday, but his former teachers at Knox High School just found out Monday afternoon. They say the initial shock hasn't worn off.

Outside Ford's childhood home in Knox, everything appeared normal, but his father was dealing with a huge loss.

"I cleaned something out of the truck a while ago. I found some stuff of his. I've got to do something to keep my mind off it," said Samuel Ford, Joe's father.

Down the street, Ford's high school teachers were trying to wrap their heads around his death.

"It's very sad to know one of your students, one of the bright people in the class is gone," said Terrill Hahn, Ford's senior English teacher.

"It's hard to lose a student, anyone, and especially to me, he's a young kid," said Peggy Shidaker, Ford's French teacher.

To her, he'll always be Joey.

"He loved to laugh. That's what I remember about Joey. He'd say something and the whole class would crack up," she said.

He was a member of the fencing club and loved history.

"He was a very curious young man," said Hahn.

"He questioned. He questioned so much in the classroom," said Shidaker.

So, Shidaker was surprised where he found his calling.

"I remember he came back, and he'd lost a lot of weight. And I asked him, 'What are you doing to lose all of that weight?' and he said, 'I've been running because I'm going to the National Guard,'" she said.

Now, she says the history buff has made his own mark.

"I have a little more peace because I know Joey was where he wanted to be," said Shidaker.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been made. It could take 10 days for Ford's body to return to the United States.

Ford had planned on returning in June to celebrate his first wedding anniversary.

Yes, they received the horrible news on mother's day... but whenever the news was received, it still would have been just as horrible. An army representative from Indy delivered the news to Karen early, early sunday morning; and at the same time one was en route to Knox to inform his parents. Joey touched many lives, not just that of his wife, parents and two older siblings, and will be missed. Heaven must have needed another hero to guard the pearly gates.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Ford family. As a guard family we too are dealing with deployment and the fears it brings. We are proud of every man and woman serving their country willingly. As to telling the family on mother's day... there is no easy time to break the news. Should they have sat on the information?

As the wife of a soldier with the 76th stationed in Iraq, news likes this really hits home. My heartfelt sympathies go to the family of Spc. Ford. I cannot imagine what they are going through. I wish everyone (including the media) would respect their privacy. His family deserves that much.

I do not know for sure if this is true or not but I was told by a reliable source that an army representative showed up on Mothers Day to give his family the horrible news. I hope this is'nt true. If it is, somebody should be slapped hard. Unbelievable!

To "2:42 PM Anonymous" : Both the US and British governments admitted WMD never existed in Iraq before the invasion. Gas prices are high because of greed. Hussein paying for bombers in Israel is Israel's problem. Hussein killing his own people, again not our problem (Middle Eastern people have been doing that to each other for centuries, it's nothing new & we're not going to be able to ever fix that). This poor kid is a victim of an unjust war waged by the rich and paid for by the poor.

FACT: "Anonymous" is an idiot. Stop drinking the kool-aide, and more-over, stop using this young man's tragedy as a platform for your propaganda. My prayers go out to the family and friends of this fine young man and to the family and friends of the rest of the fine men and women who lost their lives because of this ill-advised "war".

Fact: WMDs were found in Iraq. Fact: if we are there for oil, then why are gas prices so high? Fact: Saddam Hussein was willing to pay $20G (U.S.) to the families of homicide bombers in Israel. Fact: Saddam Hussein gassed, executed and imprisoned hundreds of thousands of Iraqis. Fact: Chemical weapons have been used in Iraq in insurgent bombings. Fact: nearly 10 years of diplomacy was not working because of the worthless U.N I feel sadness for the family of soldier.

As a soldier serving his second tour in Iraq and as a father of a soldier who was serving with SPC Ford in the 152 CAV; knew him and referred to him as his brother, it has truly been a sad weekend. Our heartfelt sorrow and utmost respect are shared with his family and friends. You are in our prayers, as are the other Indiana National Guard Soldiers who continue to serve in Iraq and have felt this significant loss too. Sincerely ... Peace Be With You, Mitch Sr

Reply to: "6:58 AM Anonymous" : Please explain how Michael Mason's comments are horrible, I don't see it. If President Gore had been allowed to take office the mess in Iraq would have never happened. WMD's have never been found in Iraq -- in fact they have hard evidence that Hussein was against al qaeda. The US is only there because that's where the oil is, and the Bush family fortune is based on oil, as is the American economy. Bush is directly responsible for Spc. Ford's death.

SPC Joseph Ford served his nation, in the Indiana National Guard. When called to active duty, he went and did his duty. Whether we agree with the war is irrelevant. SPC Ford is a hero, because he gave his life, selflessly, not for his freedom, but for the freedom of others. To his parents:Thank you for letting him serve, and supporting him. His community deserves the same praise, for being there for for SPC Ford. God bless all the soldiers, and their families. He will live forever now.

prayers to the family and friends of this brave young man. to all of the harsh comments for our president....no matter what government decisions that have been made, right or wrong, the majority of our service men chose to defend our country simply becuse they have felt tremendous love for our freedom and fellow man. freedom, simply freedom. God bless our troops and watch over them.

I work with his mother, our prayers are with his family and new wife. In speaking with them, it is sad to hear how the news media has camped out in their yard and continue to call their home. I find this rude and disrespectful. The family need to have their space and time to mourn in privacy before having camera, microphones, and reporters shoved in their face like they have done something worng. The media should be ashamed in how they disrespect the families.

Please have the decency to remove the horrible remarks made by Macheal Mason...WSBT should have a screening process that respects families during times like these, not fueling fires for idiots like him...one more thing...to Nora, who talks on the video footage of this story, it is CAValry, not CALvary...CALvary is where Jesus died!

Aaron, do you feel as stupid as you look like now. Just to be sure I called my friend Mike and sure enough...he served two tours in Viet Nam you piece of garbage. He knows the value of a human life because he watched young men lose theirs on a weekly basis. He came out without a scratch but he was lucky. He came home to jeers, not cheers. He DOES support our troops and he knows they desreve to be living the free life he thought he was fighting to preserve. That was a wasted war. So is this!

Bush should be tried for over 4,000 counts of manslaughter. What is happening over there is NOT what he sold the country on to get us to support him. Can you honestly say that with what you know now you would green light this operation? What have we gained compared to what it has cost us in lives and resources. We are so thin now we are vulnerable. Bush has ignored the advice of experts and consultants who have been there and clearly seen that we cannot achieve our objective. Whatever it was!
