ROSELAND — Small town politics are once again causing big drama in Roseland. And this time, it's all over a yard sale.

Former town council members David and Dorothy Snyder say they’re being harassed by the current town council in their effort to hold a town-wide yard sale and festival in June. They’ve advertised the event and sent fliers to neighbors, but town council member Ted Penn said the Snyders need to go through the town board to proceed.

“There must be permits, liability coverage, all kinds of consideration,” said Penn. “I find nothing wrong with it (a town-wide yard sale) but like anyone whether it be you or me, there must be permits there must be town approval for something that’s town-wide.”

Town attorney Michael Lipsky sent a letter to the Snyders telling them the needed to “contact the Clerk-Treasurer’s office to obtain the necessary permits and/or paperwork … failure to abide by town code and continue this course of action may result in penalties and or fines being assessed against you.”

As a board member, David Snyder also served as zoning commissioner, overseeing permits and code enforcement. The Snyders say they aren’t using public property for their sale so they don’t need permission from the town.

“I’m very offended that this town council is spending money on town attorneys sending people letters when (we’re) trying to do people good,” said Dorothy Snyder. “A lot of people like yard sales, a lot of people like to come to yard sales. That’s all we’re doing.”
