SOUTH BEND – For the second time in a month, an armed man has robbed an Ireland Road pharmacy of prescription painkillers.

At 1:37 p.m., police were called to Walgreens, 1010 E. Ireland Road, on a report that a Hispanic male, wearing a white shirt and a hat, entered the store, showed a gun at the pharmacy counter and demanded Oxycontin.

Police said the man fled in an unknown direction with an unknown amount of prescription drugs.

On April 14, the store was robbed by an armed man with a similar description.

Capt. Phil Trent, South Bend police department spokesman, said the cases appear similar, but it’s unknown if the robberies were committed by the same person.

A similar drug store robbery was attempted Monday morning in Elkhart.

There, police report, a man wearing a bandanna around his face entered the store and demanded Oxycontin from the pharmacist a the Walgreens at 1400 Cassopolis St.

As the man fled the pharmacy counter, a former police officer inside the store saw the suspect fleeing and was able to apprehend the man.

Trent said it was unknown, but unlikely, if there was any connection between the Elkhart and South Bend robberies.
