SOUTH BEND — Gas prices are hovering around $4 a gallon, and unemployment rates keep going up. Experts say some people are committing crimes to make a buck.

The increasing crime trend is happening all over. Investigators say Monday a female bartender was robbed and kidnapped in her own car at knife point. The 24-year-old woman escaped safely and ran to another nearby business to call 911.

But other local victims haven't been as lucky. Earlier this month police say six men beat and robbed a Portage Avenue clothing store owner, two men robbed and slashed a young woman in a South Bend parking garage and Tuesday an Elkhart cab driver crashed into an apartment building after he was robbed at knife point.

That cab driver was able to run away and call police. He escaped unharmed.

When money is tight, IU South Bend economics professor Dr. Grant Black said crime rates increase.

"It's not a new phenomenon," Black told WSBT. "And there's been research pretty much through all the decades trying to explore this."

Elkhart Police say they've noticed more crime, but they've also noticed something else. Lt. Ed Windbigler said the violence in the robberies seems to be getting worse.

"When times get tough you look for alternatives to survive," explained Grant Black. "When people get put under pressure I think they do things they normally wouldn't do."

WSBT talked to 34-year-old Marcus Childress, the man police say robbed the cab driver. In a video conference at the Elkhart County Jail, Childress said he was drunk when he did it, and he doesn't really remember what happened. He also said he's currently unemployed.

The criminals aren't doing crimes to supplement the family income. Think about it. When was the last time someone robbed a bank, a gas station or knocked over a liquor store to feed the children? EXACTLY! Has the price of Cocaine/Meth sky rocketed? Give me a break. While I'm at it, what about making criminals clean the streets????

Let's quite blaming the economy and start to blame the thugs.

I am a lil offended at Pontoons comment. The SBPD is not a joke. Unless you think that 2 of its officers dieing in the line of duty serving this community and trying to prevent crime is funny. I am not laughing. As far as the Chi-suburbs go I lived in them for a while, and depending on the tax bracket of the residents, the police arent that effective in some of those burbs. Crime is getting more frequent, and we as a civil society need to ge it together. Hopefully our economy will improve!

Mr. Obvious says that when the economy is tight, of course crime(petty and major) increases. The "experts" are right on the ball, but they are experts. It's simple logic. anonymous, you now can qualify as an expert in common sense, something the overeducated "experts" know nothing about.

Of course crime is related to the economy and it’s probably going to get worse.

5:39 Anonymous I like your style of thinking. It drives me crazy that they go to the "experts". It's no different when they tell us how to dress for winter, summer, etc. Instead of getting to the bottom of things and helping to find a solution, DUH. We know nothing has changed except our attire, it's like living in DODGE!

'Relieved' I'll bet you're a liberal, aren't you? Well, as a liberal I know you feel guilty about this kind of thing, like it's your fault for not getting these poor souls help in their time of need. Well, you know what? It actually IS your fault for coddling and supporting these lowlife scum. Larry and the others are right. Someone tries mugging me, I won't roll over and hope they let me live, then wait for justice that will never come. I have 40 calibers of justice ready for application!

I agree with Safe. You can't trust THEM to protect you. THEY let the crime rate go up so you're afraid. Who do you turn to for protection? THEM! It's all a way to get more money and control, and you have two choices: give it to THEM, or pay the price!

yep it's time for everyone to start packing some heat. I carry a firearm either on me or near me at all times, because you never know when someone wants to do something stupid. It's your constitutional right to bear arms and protect yourself from these criminals who dont care who they arm. .50 desert eagle to the chest and there wont be any more problems

All the more reason to arm yourself. If these thugs know you are armed, they might think twice about assaulting you. If they don't, too bad for them!
