SOUTH BEND — St. Joseph County police are asking the community for help in identifying a suspect and getaway vehicle from an attempted bank robbery Wednesday afternoon.

The incident occurred at about 3:15 p.m. at the Community Wide Bank, 52330 Indiana 933.

According to police, the suspect entered the bank and handed a teller a hand-written note that made reference to putting money in a bag. It also mentioned the suspect had a gun, but no weapon was displayed, police said.

The suspect eventually left the bank without receiving any money and fled southbound on foot, police said.

A witness observed the suspect get in a vehicle parked on Dubois Street and the drive east.

Police said they believe a second person was involved because the witness said the suspect got in the vehicle from the passenger side door.

The suspect is described as a white male about 6 feet tall and in his 30s. Witnesses said he wore a gray long-sleeve shirt with stripes on the sleeves, black baseball-style cap, blue jeans and black-and-white tennis shoes.

The suspect vehicle is described as a red, 1990s-era Chevrolet Cavalier with damage on its right side and missing a right front hubcap.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Phil Williams at (574) 235-9569 or at Crime Stoppers at (574) 288-STOP.

I agree, Amy. Just because there was no money taken, doesn't mean there shouldn't be severe consequences.

Why is it that if they get money this becomes front page news? Just because he didnt get any money doesnt mean he shouldnt be seen and eventually caught.

I hope anyone who knows him would have the sense to turn him in. He may not have succeeded this time, but he has obviously crossed the line and no-longer believes that being a thief is wrong. It is a matter of time before he tries something again.

You people can make all the jokes & smart --- comments you want, but it's no laughing matter to the people who are victims. I've been there and don't appreciate it.
