SOUTH BEND — Two South Bend men are in custody on preliminary charges involving carjacking and murder after a high-speed chase early Saturday that ended when one of the parties sought help at the South Bend Police Department.

Commander Tim Corbett of the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit said Saturday that Landris C. McFadden, a 22-year-old South Bend man, died from a gunshot wound to the back. He and two others drove to the police station on Sample Street following a car chase that began at York and Ireland roads.

Corbett said a “squabble between a couple of people” that began about a month ago was the cause of a carjacking about 1 a.m. Saturday that preceded a shoot-out involving two moving vehicles. He said several shots were fired as the two cars sped west on Ireland Road and north on Michigan Street before one of them stopped in the parking lot of the police station, where its occupants asked officers leaving the building for assistance.

McFadden was taken to Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No one else was injured.

Corbett said police have collected shell casings and a weapon as evidence.

Six people were involved in the incident. Police said they are seeking a third suspect.

Two suspects in custody are at the St. Joseph County Jail. No bail bonds have been set.

One of them, a 21-year-old South Bend resident, was arrested on suspicion of murder and carjacking. The other, 22, of South Bend, on suspicion of conspiracy to commit carjacking, aiding in a murder, and murder.
