LAPORTE COUNTY — Three high school students died when their truck collided with a train. The accident happened around 6:45 (CDT) Saturday morning on County Road 250 West, near Hanna in LaPorte County.

The victims have been identifed as 16-year-old Chans Garling, 15-year-old Brandon Hughes and 14-year-old James Zemanek. All are from Hanna.

"Evidently they didn't see or hear the train approaching," said Sheriff Mike Mollenhauer.

The front cab of the pickup shows the violent impact of the crash when the truck hit the train.

Two teenagers died instantly and a third died at the hospital. They were all students at South Central High School in Union Mills.

Joe Morreale lives near the tracks and knew something was wrong when he heard a helicopter fly over his home.

"I think it's horrible, especially for teenagers. It's a really sad day for our area," said Morreale.

News of the accident spread quickly in the town of Union Mills.

South Central sophomore Lucas Scarborough heard about the crash in Saturday school, he knows at least one of the victims.

"When we were in class, we always talked fooled around, we all had classes together. I don't know it will be pretty hard. I just hope it wasn't them," said Scarborough.

It will be a hard day for students when they return to school on Monday and a sad reminder about the dangers around train tracks.

"All crossings are dangerous even if they have lights and gates you know you still have to use caution," said Sheriff Mollenhauer.

Investigators say the engineer of the train had not been drinking prior to the accident. Toxicology results on the victim believed to be the driver are pending.

Brandon was one of my closest racing friends. We were a big family. But, the race track is different without the one who kept the kids from fighting. who saw the good in the bad things. i dont care what anyone thinks it should be a law to have gates up. Brandon was a son, a brother, a best friend to many. I can't get over the fact that he is gone. theres really nothing anyone can say to make me feel better. And to his momI am so sorry. He was a great respectful kid. He was my brother. I love him

My heart goes out to the parents. I too am a parent of a teen involved in fatal accident. My son was the driver and he lived. One died, a girl. It hurts when you read the papers and read the speculations and the guessing games that people play. No BLAME will ever make it any different. WORDS DO HURT. Be careful it could be your child someday. Just watch what you think and say. KARMA is a REAL thing. My prayers go out to all the parents. GOD BLESS YOU and I am SO VERY SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS.

Don't blame all the kids, just the driver. I've been down that street more times than I can count - there's a yellow warning sign way before the railroad crossing and a stop sign at the crossing itself. If you stop at that sign and look both ways, you would absolutely be able to see a train if one was approaching. The kid driving the truck did not stop, and ran into the side of the train. Inexperience? Negligence? Lack of driving skills? Either way, three kids are dead and the driver's to blame.

four one i graduated from south central just last year and i know how some of the roads are. so dont blame the kids and their age for having a license. so what does that tell u they didnt run into it but they were hit by the train. and from my own personal experience i about had an accedent there my self just cause of the hill that blocks the view so ud have to go forward just so u can look and by that time its to late. so i give love and feeings to the three families involved.

Just think what you write before you write it. if its gonna hurt someone you probally shouldn't say. RIP: Chans,Brandon, and JAMES

All trains have the right away. Be patient. Life is worth more than being in a hurry. Sit and enjoy the time to yourself while you wait for the train to pass. I know we all get frustrated at trains. Even the South Shore when it comes down Bendix Drive and holds everyone up. But it is there. Be patient. Patience is a virtue that not too many people know anymore or take to heart. Life is too short.

I dont understand why people are blaming the railroad and the state. Even though this may be a bad crossing. The train did not hit them they hit the train. If you look at the facts they hit the third car of the train. It would of not mattered if they had crossing lights and gate.It still would of not saved those young lives. This should be a wake up call for all drivers be alert know your surroundings. This could of happened to any driver who does not pay attention.

I never said that losing a friend is ever easy, but while you guys morn the loss, give some of those prayers to the RR workers that were involved. They didn't go to work with the intent of killing someone, and now they have to live with this forever. And acorrding to what I have read, there is a stop sign there. No matter where the sign is, it is law to come to a complete stop and look both ways before crossing. If they had done that I doubt they would have missed a freight train.

How dare you call them immature for sharing their thoughts with us. We do not know the facts to this accident yet so why are people assuming? Please lets wait for the facts to come out.

The scenario of this accident will keep being repeated as long as 16 year old "children" are allowed to drive with other "children" in their vehicles. The driver was obviously distracted by the other 2 boys being in the truck with him. Since these boys grew up in this community they are all aware of the railroad crossings and should have been more aware. Putting crossing arms at each and every crossing will not help.If they go around or pay no attention to the tracks in both directions then.....

We live in Union Mills and I stand behind ALL our children in the South Central School system. My husband grew up one road over from where this happened and says that it IS a blind crossing. Crossing guards with lights should be at ALL train tracks. Living in Union Mills, trains can be easily forgotten. With a train going by every 8-10 minutes, you can almost become immune. And they want to put the Intemodal here. Yeah, that just what we need...more train crossings...NOT!!

Young "adults" posting comments on these sites is another prime example of just how immature and angry they live. And we allow them to drive and make adult decisions at this age. Quit worrying about the trivial stuff and take a moment to think about the tremendous loss. Thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims. Let's also not forget the conductor and engineer on the train. They are human beings with all of the feelings and emotions that anyone else experiences, and they have just as hard a time when something like this happens as anybody else would. Thoughts and prayers also with them. What a senseless, and easily avoidable tragedy.

I am very sorry for the families loss, I have kids of my own, and can't imagine getting that phone call. However, every day we see people go around gates, and across crossings with stop signs posted without even slowing down. I almost hit 2 teenage girls walking down the tracks who weren't paying attn. Please, folks, STOP AND LOOK!!! Those stop signs are there because you need to STOP. So many accidents are avoidable if people would take the extra 15 seconds to stop and look. 15 seconds!!!

There are no gates out in those rural crossings. Dosent matter if 16 was too young too drive or whatever.
