SOUTH BEND — A 63-year-old security guard died late Saturday evening from severe trauma to the head after a patron at the South Bank Lounge attacked him early Saturday, police said.

James E. Muddiman Sr. was trying to get people to leave the bar at 3 a.m. when 27-year-old Joshua Kati assaulted him, police said.

"When I was in the parking lot I was sitting there, everybody started yelling, screaming, a bunch of people started running around and it was chaotic,” explained Bill Townsend, who was outside the South Bank Lounge when the attack occurred. “I couldn't believe something like that happened when I found out later on what it really was.”

Muddiman was treated at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

Kati, a South Bend resident, was initially arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery and battery resulting in serious bodily injury. Those charges were upgraded on Monday.

The incident took place in the 1700 block of Lincoln Way East.

When I first read the story, I could just imagine what the situation was. Then I read the reports, and turns out I was exactly right. This guy hit a bouncer to be tough in front of his girl. Sounds like a class act. House arrest? Cocaine charges? Skipping school? Physical abuse to his mother? It is truly sad that someone like this is has children. It's also sad that people are defending his character...mostly younger girls who cannot provide a credible character reference.

I know both Jim and Josh. Jim was a kind hearted man that loved kids. Josh was a great friend and loved his kids. What happened is unfortunate and I feel for both families involved. I feel Jim was doing his job to break up a fight and Josh hit him in the mix of it all. All these horrible comments just need to stop. Neither of these men are horrible. Both families will now have to live without these special men. Stop trying to place blame on everyone and allow a trial to proceed.

To those hating on Josh, check this, its a shame that you tolerate drug dealers, thieves, killers, rapists and other criminals, but if someone does his duty and tells the police of these people he is labeled a snitch. Thats backwards and shows the character of a persons heart, and can go as far as to say you are a coward for not correcting your fellow brother or sister. I guarantee that if someone is in my hood and doing those things I'll say something. I don't want my kids around that.

Why in the world did they have an old guy working security in a bar when people are drinking and tempers rise? Don't you think someone younger and more able to handle themselves in a fight should have been working security? I think the bar owner should be behind bars also for hiring someone so old! It was only one punch people, it's not like he got beat down.

Well, bar patron, if you had acted like Kati you would be sitting in the cell right next to him. Sadly, Kati made a bad decision. I also wonder why he was at a bar if on house arrest. To charge this man with murder would be an outrage. The defination of murder requires an intent to kill. This is not the case. Only the prosecutor can make that determination with the evidence he has. My question is how many sober people were there at South Bank at 3:30am?

HE IS A MURDERER and a menace to society. What is wrong with a 63 year old man working a bar? Are you blaming him? Josh is the ABUSER HERE!

Did josh hit him with the intention to kill him...No and did that punch cause the mans death? Everyone likes to look at things in black and white until its them sitting in the hot seat so really who are we to judge?

WHY WAS HE EVEN AT THE BAR! He's the one at complete fault here and he WILL get what's coming to him, you can count on it. I hope he likes prison life, cause that's where he's gonna be for a while. I hope he rots in hell for what he did to my family

Save your biased opinions until after his trial. These articles have been catering to this trash-talking guard like he's some kind of saint. If you want to call Josh a cold blooded killer, you better learn the facts. That bouncer was a real "tough guy" until he got 1-punched. If he would have survived, this probably wouldn't even be a story. I'm not saying what happened was justified, but unless you know Josh and how well he's cleaned up his act, don't even sit here and try to judge the man.

Granted the situation is very serious, but what is a 63-year-old man doing working security at a bar, especially South Bank Lounge? My condolences to the family, but he really should've never been in this environment. Josh is a good man and made a bad decision. As every good person, he will accept responsibility for his actions, but (like every person that has been in such an altercation) did not have intentions to take a life.

I think Concerned is correct, Josh is a product of his enviroment. Anyone who knows Josh and the family he came from well enough, knows the trouble this kid has had from birth. He can be sweet and he is very sensitive. He should have a fair trial like anyone else. I just cannot believe that he intended to kill anyone. He has made mistakes, so have I, but I never thought his life would come to this. Again, not justifying, just trying to share some understanding.

I have a career, nice home, loving family, and I pay taxes. Based on your logic I should be a murderer because I was a less than steller student?

Josh let a situation get very seriously out of hand. He should never have assaulted someone but do you people really think he intended to kill this man, of course not.
