SOUTH BEND — Police apprehended two boys, ages 15 and 16, suspected of trying to rob the Communitywide Federal Credit Union on Western Avenue Monday morning.

Police were called to the credit union, at 1555 W. Western Avenue, about 10:13 a.m. Monday after the teens each gave notes demanding money to two separate tellers, slipping the notes under security glass.

It was the third time someone has attempted to rob the credit union since March.

Capt. Steve Richmond said the boys showed no weapon and tellers at the credit union were slow in processing their request.

"They no more turned and left the bank when we arrived on scene," Richmond said.

Police caught the one teen in the parking lot with help from a police dog. Another youth jumped a fence to an industrial area in back of the credit union. Police then set up a perimeter to find him.

Richmond said a police dog helped lead officers to the teen hiding in a dumpster.

Both teens were apprehended within about 25 minutes of the robbery attempt. The first youth who was apprehended was taken to Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center for a minor injury from the police dog’s bite.

No weapons were found on the suspects, police said, and no money was taken from the credit union.

The credit union was closed for about an hour while police gathered evidence inside the lobby.
