Three teens died when they crashed into a train at South County Road 250 West

Neighbors say the railroad crossing on South County Road 250 West, just west of the LaPorte-Starke County line, is hard to see. Three teens died there when they crashed into a train on Saturday, May 17, 2008. WSBT photo)

UNION MILLS — It was the first day back to school for students at South Central High School after three of their classmates died in a tragic accident.

Counselors met students and staff at the school Monday. The school lost three students this weekend when their car slammed into the side of a train.

The accident happened Saturday morning, just west of the Starke-LaPorte County Line, on South County Road 250 West.

Family members and neighbors say that crossing is especially dangerous and changes need to be made. There is a stop sign there but you can't see whether a train is coming because of the trees on either side.

Some say they can't help but wonder, had there been warning lights and a stop arm would these teens still be alive?

At South Central High School Monday, students signed banners and the lockers of three well-known students, their lives taken too soon.

“We offer our deepest sympathies to the families of Brandon, James and Chans,” said South Central School Corporation Superintendent Chris Smith in a press conference held Monday at the school.

Meanwhile, their families are still trying to understand it.

“He was a good driver ... I don't know,” Russell Garling, Chans’ father, told WSBT News.

Why did 16-year-old Chans Garling crash into a passing freight train Saturday morning?

The freshman football standout was killed along with his two passengers, 15-year-old Brandon Hughes and 14-year-old James Zemanek, all heading home after a Friday night sleep over.

“I wish they'd get lights, at least some kind of warning,” said Chans’ mother Tina Garling.

They do say what neighbors have complained about here for years — the crossing, they claim, is not so easy to see.

“You almost have to pop up over the hill before you actually recognize there's a crossing over here,” Russell Garling said.

There is a stop sign, but no flashing lights or stop arms. Both sides of the road are covered by trees.

“You can't see it,” said neighbor Leslie Metts. “When you're going this way, you have to actually stop and you have to creep up to see what’s going on.”

“Something’s got to be done here, this is crazy,” exclaimed Tina Garling.

Monday the State Department of Transportation told WSBT News that federal funding has already been given to railroad company Norfolk Southern. An improvement project is scheduled for this year, including cross arms, flashing lights and pavement markings.

But a spokesperson for Norfolk Southern said he couldn't confirm that.

“It's just a tragedy that really shouldn't have happened ... it shouldn't have happened,” Tina Garling said.

A spokesperson with Norfolk Southern says he hopes to be able to confirm this improvement project as soon as he finds out.

My son was a driver in a railroad accident. I have never seen THESE tracks. BUT I do know the set he was in an accident on was TERRIBLE with crossing gates lights and NO STOP SIGN. No matter what your age, I know it's harder for the young ones but please read the signs. They are there for a reason. Like I said Never seen this set of tracks so I will not comment on their condition but it does sound pretty bad. My prayers are with the parents. Please get together and talk it out TOGETHER.

People are right this might not have happened if there were lights and gates. But there aren't there is a stop sign which means STOP. And if you are a at railroad crossing your suppose to look both ways before crossing. IT IN THE HAND BOOK may be we should read it again. And yes this is a disater lets learn from it and not do it again.

this is to troy and jason. you can not go around saying hurtful things like you are. do you have any idea how many people look at this, and how many people are hurting. have YOU ever been to THOSE tracks where the ACCIDENT was? if you have then you would be able to tell me that it is a very DANGEROUS crossing. and many people have got into accidents at that railroads. so watch what you say, and have some respect. seriously.

I knew Brandon and James and their families. I was there when Brandon's mom got the news. I went to the railroad tracks for the candlelit vigil that the students of South Central put together. I parked at the end of the hill and could not see the tracks until I got to the top. So if a train was comming but not yet there you wouldn't be able to tell. People need to be more respectful, the families may read these comments and they have been hurt enough without your judgemental comments.

Troy, you nailed it! Steve, that way of driving at rr crossings is going to get YOU killed someday. I hope you realize that before it's too late. Too much reliance on anybody else but ourselves. No matter what type of crossing protection, it is still up to US AND US ALONE to make sure it is safe to cross BEFORE we cross. If that means stopping at every crossing, looking, maybe turn down the radio, roll down the window, then DO IT! Is saving that 30 sec. so important that you gamble w/ your life?

Steve, had you not stopped for that stop sign you would be dead also. The stop sign is not a "stop if you want" sign

the state determines need for lights at a crossing. This is done by studying accidents traffic at a particular crossing. It may be a dangerous crossing, but if there have been very few accidents, the state won't install lights at a crossing. It is a tragic. But it's driving 101, pay attention when coming to a railroad crossing.

Regardless of the circumstances, this is a complete tragedy. I am 35 years old and thee are times that I do not stop at the crossings in the country with just a plain old stop sign. If there were gates and lights, we wouldn't even be here typing this stuff! God bless their souls, my prayers are with the families.

For the record, this crossing is a lil deceptive and pretty dangerous. Believe the families when they say that! No matter the laws about teen drivers, they could have all been in thier 20s. Accidents like this are bound to happen in those places where the crossings are open. Just pray for the families and stop scrutinizing. Have some respect. They sounded like real good kids and deserve respect. Please just becareful when driving anywhere. My condolences to the family.

Tuesday, May 20 at 2:31 PM ep wrote ...

I think there's a law regarding teenaged drivers and teenaged passengers, isn't there? Correct me if I'm wrong, but should there not have been an adult chaperone? The rest is clear..there is a clearly marked stop sign, and if an appropriate stop was taken there would have been no way to hit the THIRD car of the train. Devastating for the families, but let's not try to lay responsibility on others.

As far as I see it just about all of INDIANAS railroad crossings are DANGEROUS. Born and raised.. never seen a safe set yet!

Tuesday, May 20 at 11:04 AM Mike wrote ...

Why does the state have to do something everytime for people committing ignorant acts? Unless lights and gates fail, which don't happen very often, it is complete failure of the driver if they hit a train. Good line of site, I can see the stop sign, no trees blocking the sign and all RR tracks have at least 8 feet of clearance on both sides of the track at all times unless it is a branch line which this is not.

Tuesday, May 20 at 8:57 AM Anonymous wrote ...

Is the crossing well marked? Isn't it? Does it really matter? It's not as if the crossing just popped up since the last time they drove down that road. The only thing that matters is we've lost three teens and three families are hurting because of it. Will it help to reason it out? Just keep the family in your prayers.

I just want to say this could have been prevented five years ago when Mrs. Zemanek was hit on these same tracks. The State or the Railroad did nothing about it. Again these same railroad tracks have taken the live of her son and two other Wonderful boys. THESE WERE GOODBOYS!!!!!! Something needs to be done. Its five years to late. But maybe it will save another family. Three familys lives have changed forever.GOD BLESS THESE BOYS AND THEIR FAMILYS.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the families that are involved with this. Its sad that their lives were cut very short. Turn to God in the time of sorrow. He will comfort you and be with you. Time will go by slow. I know first hand. I lost my brother last June due to cancer. He was 25. It seems like yesterday, but God will take care of you all. Hope everything will get better over time and that something good will come out of this terrible accident.

I agree Anon. The marks suggest they tried to ignore the stop sign. I wonder if they were going to jump the tracks and try to get airborn. I remember doing it as a teen for fun.

From what I can see, there is a decent line of site and that stop sign is right at the crossing. A tragedy that didn't have to happen.
