GOSHEN — A Parkside Elementary student is in the hospital after he had to be rescued from a Goshen swimming pool.

It happened at a home in the 64000-block of County Road 21 at about 1:45 p.m. Friday.

The school superintendent tells us 10-year-old Christian Barnes was on a field trip with his class when he jumped into the pool to retrieve something from the bottom.

Other students alerted an adult when Barnes stopped moving under the water. The adult pulled Barnes out of the water and began CPR. It is not clear how long he was under water.

Barnes was airlifted to a South Bend hospital, breathing but unconscious.

The superintendent says the next 48 hours are critical.

A letter was sent home to parents of the boy's classmates to tell them what happened.
